Magnus

The Sorceror of The Ring City Four

Overview

Magnus is a figure shrouded in both mystery and ambition. A human with a sharp tongue and a sharper mind, Magnus has spent most of his life chasing power, wealth, and the answers to his mysterious origins. With a unique connection to ancient Venator Fey magic, Magnus is both a formidable spellcaster and a cunning manipulator, using his skills to navigate the treacherous paths of the August Realms.

Early Life

Abandoned as a child, Magnus grew up hardened by the streets of Ashbourne. He quickly learned to fend for himself, harnessing his innate arcane talents to earn coin, manipulate the unsuspecting, and defend against those who sought to exploit him. Without family or friends, Magnus developed a ruthless pragmatism, viewing the world as a chessboard where every move had to serve his survival and advancement.

The Encounter with Destiny

Magnus’ life took a dramatic turn when he came into possession of a mysterious, blood-bound grimoire. This book, sealed with arcane bands, responded only to his essence, binding itself to him and transforming his very being. Its connection to the ancient Venator Fey brought not only unparalleled magical power but also whispers of dark truths about his past. The cryptic figure who gave him the grimoire hinted at his destiny, leaving Magnus to piece together his role in the unfolding saga of the August Realms.

The Truth of His Heritage

Unknown to Magnus for much of his life, his mother is Marion Hunt, the enigmatic emissary of Mab and a key figure in the August Realms, making him the Grandson of Rin Hunt as well. Marion, fearing for Magnus’ safety, left him in the care of the Order of the Twelve when he was an infant. The memory of his mother’s sacrifice was magically erased, though traces of her influence linger in Magnus’ talents and drive.

The grimoire Magnus wields is the same cursed Venator tome that once corrupted Errias Redraven. Though weakened by Errias' eventual redemption, the book still pulses with volatile power, a reflection of Magnus' own inner turmoil.

Role in the Ring City Four

Magnus joined the Ring City Four through a mix of calculated opportunity and a desire for greater power. As the group’s most entrepreneurial member, he often takes charge of negotiations and dealings, always angling for a profitable outcome. While his companions might find him frustratingly mercenary, Magnus’ pragmatism and arcane expertise make him an invaluable ally.

Personality

Magnus is ambitious, intelligent, and deeply guarded. His sharp wit and love of wealth mask a lingering vulnerability tied to his abandonment and his ongoing quest for identity. While he often seems self-serving, Magnus harbors a quiet loyalty to his companions, though he would likely deny it.

"Magnus? Oh yeah, he's sharper than a gnomish blade and twice as dangerous if you owe him money. The kid’s got the kind of ambition that makes dragons nervous, and trust me, I’ve sold scrolls to dragons. But beneath all the scheming, I think there's a good heart in there... buried somewhere under a pile of gold and a few too many contracts."
