Mab

“May darkness forever cover the land, this game is over ‘Holland’.” - Mab

Early Life

Mab was once a beloved figure in the Feywild, the younger sister of Titania, ruler of the Seelie Court. Though often overshadowed by her elder sister, Mab was an integral part of Fey society, acting as Titania’s deputy when her sister was absent. She was known for her charm, wit, and beauty, embodying the lighter aspects of Fey nature.

Mab’s fate changed drastically when she was presented with a gift—a large black diamond—from a group of dwarven miners. The diamond, later revealed to be a vessel of immense and corruptive power, twisted her into a dark and malevolent version of herself. Under its influence, Mab transformed into the first Unseelie Fey and founded the Unseelie Court, an assembly of evil and chaotic fey creatures. Declaring herself the Queen of Air and Darkness, she waged war against Titania for control of the Feywild.

The War Between the Courts

The war between the Seelie and Unseelie Courts was brutal, leaving the Feywild scarred by centuries of conflict. Mab’s new powers gave her the upper hand, and the Unseelie forces began to overwhelm Titania’s armies. As defeat seemed imminent for the Seelie Court, Titania extended an olive branch, proposing a final battle to determine the ruler of the Feywild.

However, Titania’s proposal was a carefully orchestrated trap. As the sisters clashed on the battlefield, Titania’s mages enacted a powerful spell, splitting the battlefield away from the Feywild and into the Mortal Realm, severing Mab’s connection to her immortality. Now mortal, Mab was vulnerable, and Titania took advantage of the situation, piercing her heart with a spear and killing her instantly.

In the aftermath, Titania removed Mab’s name from Fey history, disavowing her as a fey. In the Feywild, she became known only as “The Queen of Air and Darkness,” a title whispered with fear and disdain. Her true name was lost to time, further isolating her from her former life.

Role in the Story

The Curse of Holland Bray

In her time as the Queen of Air and Darkness, Mab foresaw the danger posed by Lija, a fey noble who would later become Holland Bray. Mab realized that Lija sought the Black Diamond, the same artifact that had corrupted her and caused the war with Titania. Determined to prevent another tragedy, Mab cursed Lija, transforming her into a wolf and binding her to the mortal plane. This curse kept Holland away from the diamond for centuries, limiting her ability to enact her plans.

Even in death, Mab continued to thwart Holland Bray. Her presence near the diamond and her spiritual influence served as obstacles to Holland’s schemes. Mab’s interactions with the party were often motivated by her desire to stop Holland from repeating history and unleashing the diamond’s destructive power.

Spirit Guide to the Party

Many years after her death, Mab lingered as a spirit, bound to the Mortal Realm where she had been killed. Her spirit became a guide to the Ring City Four, aiding them in their journey to uncover the truth about the corruption in the August Realms. While often cryptic, Mab provided wisdom and insight, helping the party navigate the complex web of events surrounding the Black Diamond.

Mab’s hostility toward Holland Bray became evident early in her interactions with the party. When Holland first encountered Mab’s spirit, she reacted with fear, suggesting a deeper connection between the two. Mab would later reveal that she had cursed Holland, trapping her in a wolf form to prevent her from accessing the Black Diamond.

Revelation at Alvethastion

Mab’s spirit became fully visible to The Ring City Four when they reached the heart of Alvethastion, the site where Titania’s spear had killed her. Standing at the center of the Great Tree, she recounted her tragic story and revealed the true nature of the Black Diamond. Mab implored the party to help her stop Holland Bray and protect the August Realms from the diamond’s corruptive influence.

Appearance

Mab is a vision of haunting beauty, even in her spectral form:

  • Skin: Pale and shimmering like moonlight.
  • Eyes: Dark as a starless night, holding the weight of centuries of sorrow.
  • Hair: Once golden and radiant, her hair turned black as the diamond that corrupted her.
  • Wound: A gaping wound in her chest marks where Titania’s spear ended her life, an ever-present reminder of her mortality.

Even as a spirit, Mab’s presence exudes the otherworldly grace of her Fey origins, mingled with the tragic aura of her fall from grace.

Powers and Abilities

As the Queen of Air and Darkness, Mab wields immense magical power, even in her spectral form:

  • Manipulation of Shadows and Cold: Mab can command the darkness and chill of the Unseelie Fey, enveloping her surroundings in an unnatural cold.
  • Emotional and Perceptual Manipulation: She has the ability to influence emotions and alter perceptions, making her an expert in deception and persuasion.
  • Spirit Form Abilities: As a spirit, she can manifest visions, communicate across realms, and guide those she deems worthy.
  • Binding Curses: Mab’s curse on Holland Bray demonstrates her mastery of long-lasting, intricate magical bindings.

Legacy and Influence

Mab’s impact on the August Realms is profound:

  • The Black Diamond’s Legacy: Her connection to the diamond remains a pivotal part of the realm’s history, with its corruptive power threatening to repeat the past.
  • Holland Bray: Mab’s curse delayed Holland’s plans for centuries, providing crucial time for the August Realms to prepare for her eventual resurgence.
  • The Ring City Four: Mab’s guidance helped uncover the truth behind Holland’s schemes, positioning the party to prevent further catastrophe.

Trivia

  • The Queen of Air and Darkness was originally going to be the antagonist of Campaign 1 until the DM decided to change it to Draga Zhao and then Holland Bray
  • The idea for a spirit guide that supports the players throughout the party came from the Guardian Angel from Borderlands 2
  • In the original story of the Feywild the Queen of Air and Darkness' physical form was destroyed but she still ruled the Unseelie fey as a ethereal force, but this was changed to her dying in the August Realms lore.

Titania - Sister

"Mab is... complicated. To most, she’s the Queen of Air and Darkness, a figure of myth and terror, the embodiment of everything cold and cruel about the Unseelie Fey. But when you stand before her—really stand before her—you see something else. You see loss, pain, and a resolve that’s as sharp as her icy glare. She’s not kind, not in the way mortals think of kindness, but there’s a strange fairness in her, a willingness to protect what she sees as hers. Working for Mab is like walking a blade: dangerous, precarious, but undeniably powerful. She’s no one’s savior, but she’s not the monster most stories make her out to be. She’s... necessary."
Marion Hunt, reflecting on her time as Mab’s emissary.
