Aarakocra

Aarakocra in the August Realms

Overview

The Aarakocra, a bird-like humanoid race, are a relatively rare and enigmatic species in the August Realms. Known for their connection to the skies, they are both admired and misunderstood by the other inhabitants of the world. Their natural ability to fly gives them a unique perspective, both literally and metaphorically, often placing them in the roles of scouts, messengers, and wanderers.

Despite their rarity, Aarakocra hold significant cultural importance in certain regions, particularly in the higher altitudes of Ithrin and the mountain ranges of the Northern Wildlands. Their small numbers and preference for high, isolated locales make them elusive to many of the more grounded races, adding to their mystique.

History of the Aarakocra

Origins in the August Realms

Legend states that the Aarakocra were brought to the August Realms from the Plane of Air during the Age of Wonders. Summoned by ambitious wizards seeking allies in the skies, the Aarakocra who came through ended up remaining in the realms after their duties were complete, fascinated by the diversity of its lands and creatures. Over time, they integrated into the world, building nests and communities high above the mortal conflicts below.

The Skyward Retreat

During the Age of Strife, the Aarakocra withdrew from the affairs of the mortal realms, fleeing to the highest peaks and most inaccessible areas to escape the chaos of war. This self-imposed isolation led many to believe that the Aarakocra had vanished entirely, leaving only myths and tales of bird-like beings in the clouds.

Modern Aarakocra

Today, Aarakocra are rare sights in the August Realms. They are most often seen as emissaries, traders, or adventurers, seeking to learn more about the world below or to reclaim their place in it. Many have reconnected with the Kingdom of Ithrin, where their high-altitude nests are protected by mountain-dwelling allies. Some have also been drawn to Tallos, intrigued by its cosmopolitan cities and magical advancements.

Cultural Traits

Worship of Sky and Storm

Aarakocra often worship deities of the sky, wind, and storms. Gods like Melora (Nature) and Tempus (Strength and Storms) are commonly revered, with elaborate rituals involving aerial displays and wind chimes made of natural materials. Their spiritual connection to the skies shapes their philosophies and daily lives.

Clan-Based Communities

Aarakocra live in small, tight-knit clans that value loyalty and communal effort. These clans are led by elders, who are often the most experienced fliers and warriors. Aarakocra view the concept of "grounded" life as both literal and metaphorical, associating freedom with the open sky and imprisonment with the earth.

Competitive Spirit

While not as combative as the Orcs, Aarakocra have a competitive nature, especially when it comes to flight. Racing through treacherous mountain passes is a popular pastime, and Aarakocra adventurers are known to challenge their comrades to daring feats of agility and bravery.

Lord Deiren Helvhak, grumbling about his encounters with Aarakocra scouts during a border patrol in Ithrin.
