State of Octavia
"Remember- the Autocrat watches over you!"The State of Octavia was an autocratic regime centered around the planet of Octavia. While it was never anything more than a minor power, it distinguished itself as a stubborn and ambitious nation both before and after its failed war with the Confederacy of Interstellar Republics. Its people were primarily of Slavic descent and spoke the Octavian Language, but the State's official administrative and diplomatic language was the Atlas Standard Language.

The State of Octavia was nominally a unitary autocracy, but the old aristocracy held a significant amount of power.
History
Before the rise of the Terran Commonwealth, the world of Octavia was ruled by the State of Octavia, an autocratic regime with a powerful aristocracy pulling many of the strings.
The State of Octavia was founded in 3305, being formed from the Octavian League, a transnational government made up of the remnants of various Slavic nations that settled on the planet of Octavia. Octavia had, by then, become a major trading hub in human-controlled space in the Atlas Sector, due to its central position.
Later, though, the colony of Rusan became much more popular, as the majority of the human population shifted eastward. Rusan maintained its status as trade capital of human space, becoming heavily urbanized, and by 3390, the capital of the large United Systems Republic, which controlled the entirety of the eastern fringe colonies. Over the course of the next two centuries, Rusan would become an ecumenopolis, the sector's most populated such world.
This left Octavia in a state of recession for several generations, leading to a more authoritarian regime. The various Autocrats and aristocratic oligarchs initiated vast urban and industrial expansions to compete with Rusan and the USR, but failed to keep pace. By 3520, Octavia was nearly an ecumenopolis, albeit one in a state of decay. The State of Octavia pursued expansionism in the following decades. By 3590, the Octavians had expanded their area of control near Confederate space, which brought them into conflict with the Confederacy of Interstellar Republics. The two nations had different ideological outlooks and conflicting interests, and border skirmishes and other issues eventually boiled over into all-out warfare.
The Confederacy was, at the time, much more powerful than Octavia, and the conflict culminated in a battle in orbit of Octavia itself, in which the State was defeated. Octavia was forced to abandon their territorial gains and form a demilitarized zone in the new border regions. This defeat sparked popular disapproval toward the government, which the people saw as weak and corrupt. This led to the rise of the military strongman Anton Ivanoff toppling the old Autocrat (Piotr Timoshenko) and taking the title for himself. Several failed assassination attempts from the nobility followed, and Ivanoff used these to justify stripping the aristocracy of their power.
With revanchist sentiments rising in the population, the Octavians installed a puppet government into the neighboring Republic of Tarsus. Ivanoff later integrated the territory of Tarsus and Octavia into one nation, which he boldly called the Terran Commonwealth. During this time, the governmental and socio-economic structure of the nation was overhauled to become similar to what it is today.
Disbandment
Autocrat Anton Ivanoff, after stripping the aristocracy of its powers, integrated Octavia and Tarsus into the Terran Commonwealth, dissolving both states.
Demography and Population
The population of the State of Octavia was entirely human, and the vast majority of them were of Slavic descent.
Foreign Relations
Octavia had a rivalry with the Confederacy that resulted in a war between the two (the Confederate-Octavian War), which Octavia lost. Since then, Octavia sought to increase its own power, culminating in the formation of the Terran Commonwealth.
