History

No one knows exactly where the dragonkin came from. The simplest and most common understanding is that they were like any other people, having their origins in the deeps of time and being born, growing, and dying like everyone else. More fantastical theories exist. Some hold they were created by the primordial goddess of chaos Tiamat to counter the peoples made by the younger gods. Others suggest that every dragonkin was once another species and was transformed by the magic of a great dragon. That the dragonkin remained relatively islolated through their history allowed many such fantastical speculations to arise.

Ancient sources depict dragonborn in high positions within the Imperial military and government, as well as within the Church of Eternal Dawn. They are shown tall and strong looking, mighty warriors and learned sorcerers. The truth of this, how many they were, and how important to the Imperial institutions cannot now be said with any certainty. But we do know what became of them, at least in part.

When the Dragon Madness struck, suspicion fell on the Dragonkin. Some feared they would prove susceptible to the same fall, others believed the dragonkin were responsible for the Madness in a botched attempt to gain dominance over the dragons. This last theory seems to have been put about by he last Hierophant of the Church of Eternal Dawn, and was used to justify a large-scale purge of the dragonkin. As the church was in the midst of splitting, with many leaving to follow Shalim, the remnant of the Chuch set about hunting down the dragonkin. Bounties were offered. Imperial army units turned on the dragonkin in their ranks. Villages drove out their neighbors. While it seems impossible that every single dragonkin was killed in this way, they disappear entirely from the scant historical record shortly after the Madness began, and Emberhold has had no report of a living dragonkin since.
