The exiled twin of Ulysses Beaufort, Mordeo has lived his whole life underneath his brother, even being born 8 minutes later.
Years ago, Ulysses and Mordeo Beaufort were born to the mayor of Kosona and his wife. As a child, Mordeo slipped poison in Ulysses’ food. The latter was paralysed from the legs down then on.
As mayor, Ulysses drained the surrounding earth of its natural resources. As the landscape dried up and the shadow creatures began to infiltrate, Mordeo found they could communicate with them. Ulysses decided to move the city to the air, building great airships and balloons. Mordeo disagreed with the move, and one day Ulysses locked him in a cupboard to keep him quiet. Inside the cupboard, Mordeo found a portal. Entering it, he found himself in a bountiful paradise; a landscape of fruit trees, flowering vines, and winding rivers, populated with creatures and plants. But when he tried to leave, he found he couldn’t. Ulysses had employed a magician to place a curse on the cabinet.
Mordeo could not leave until he found the ‘perfect meal’ – the food that would bring him back to the real world – as punishment for the poisoning Mordeo had attempted a long time ago. For a long time Mordeo existed in a starving, squalid state, trying every food but not being satisfied by any.
As he reigned over the undercity, Anosok, Mordeo summoned a succubus, Psyche, to help him in his loneliness and in ruling the kingdom after falling into a deep depression. Eventually, our intrepid band of adventurers helped free him, simultaneously dooming him to an unpleasant death, by feeding him the same poisoned apple in a bitterly ironic fashion.
