Tyro

"Three field tyros from the University of Tethys arrived during the hostage negotiation, sir. It was... it was a bloodbath. One minute we see them slipping into a rooftop access and then when we got in there half the hostages had been executed by the perpetrators but all the perpetrators were... still alive, basically. I mean... they were... do you know what vivsection is? I didn't... I had to look it up after. I really miss not knowing."   ~Sergeant Amul Kripke, Celestial Security

Relics

There was a time when all Academicians apprenticed as Field Tyros. These were the bad old days, when the Universities orbiting Neptune and Venus were laws unto themselves and in fierce competition knowledge and technology. Those days are past, but the universities kept their personal security force. Some might even call them 'academic kill squads.'

Ever Onward

By the Age of Convergence, a Tyro's job has been simplified into three parts; first and foremost, they see to the security of the universities. This makes them part police, part defense force, and part intelligence agency. Next, they take the fight to their University's enemies. This might be rescuing students taken hostage by terrorists, thwarting the activities of a rival university, or getting involved in a copyright war against a corporation. Finally, they still advance knowledge. A good Tyro will spare the time to perform a full body scan on an enemy's body, or even utilize Mindrippers to preserve the enemy mind as a Ghost Mind Emulation. Any time a new and hostile alien species is discovered, Tyros will flock to the front and study them in action, leaving behind vivisected bodies and dismantled alien technology in their wake.

There Goes the Neighborhood

When Tyros show up, people with the intellect to understand what's happening leave. On their respective moons dominated by their patron universities, they are respected, revered even. Everywhere else, they're either feared, hated, or both.
