Monocrys
"Sure, it's not pretty but I can make it in the fabricator. At least nobody on my ship is naked. Except Shipwreck, but she just prefers it that way."
Carbon Clothes of the Carbon Age
Monocrys is made from crystalline monofilaments braided into hyperthin threads which are braided into string and then woven into fabric. The result is a coarse, durable fabric that's resistant to impact but all but useless against beam weapons or high-heat. It can be made from or recycled at any fabricator and is ubiquitous across human space. It can be dyed, but it can also be 'light stained' by bombarding it with photons. It's a durable material with some defensive value, but its primary appeal is that its so cheap that it might as well be free.
