"Bountineers are like cops, except it's legal when you shoot them back."
~Astolfo Macarelli
Legal Piracy
Bountineers carry a license that allows them to attack criminals and acquire their illicit goods. There are two caveats: One, their LEGAL goods are presumably up for salvage (which the bountineers will just so happened to be in a good place to collect) and two, the Bountineers are SUPPOSED to 'sell' the illicit goods along with the perpetrators to the nearest law enforcement outfit. Not doing so can get a license revoked, but that doesn't prevent the temptation posed by knowing a good fence.
Extralegal Police
Bountineer licenses also carry with them access to the Bounty Database, a SolarNet site where Planetary bureaucracies and law enforcement can put bounties on fugitive criminals. Bountineer licenses, it is important to note, are not actually legal enforcement powers and anyone can capture a fugitive and collect a bounty, the license just provides access. This also means that if a bountineer uses force to get their targets, those targets,
legally, can defend themselves and will not catch an extra charge. This is considered very much in line with
Harmony and Detente.
An Archetype
Bountineers are sort of the ur-example of the freelancer. Professional Bountineers live from one bounty or boarding action to the next, taking large payouts and generally partying it up in between. The Bountineer represented by the lone wolf type, the kind who ply the starry void in a small, one man freighter and get into gunfights in the Martian desert bringing fugitives back to justices. For crew of a larger ship, add in skills that might help them operate subsystems such as weapons or engineering, or perhaps leadership skills if they're the captain of such a crew.
