FAQ

Here are some frequently asked questions about the world of the Age of Calamitous.

What kind of technology exists in this world?

Let’s divide this into two categories. Industrial and Weaponry. The industry revolves heavily around the middle ages and does not include the leap to steam engines. We’re still bound to the old ages in many regards. As for weapons, black powder has recently been discovered but is mainly used for ship cannons. The technology has not evolved into handheld firearms or artillery. In other words, as a few examples, swords & shields, bows, and catapults are the primary type of combat used throughout the world.

What’s the level of fantasy in this world?

If we put aside the fact that the world itself is fictional as well as the timeline, there is a lot of focus on realistic elements. While there is specific fantasy species and magical aspects part of the world, there is a lot of attention on keeping the general world grounded. To give a few examples of this, a temperate environment would consist of bears, deer, foxes, horses, etc. rather than fantastical creatures walking about. This goes for the design of nature as well, which means the majority of the world has a natural feel to it.

Does AoC (The Age of Calamitous) take place in our real-world timeline?

The main story surrounding AoC is set in 1724, but that’s not the 18th century of our real world. This is an important distinction as many elements in AoC are drawn from different time periods. At the present time, you have black powder used for ship cannons, but at the same time, there are no handheld firearms. In other words, ship cannons are the exception. AoC draws from the Early Middle Ages all the way up to the Victorian era. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll see technology from these late eras, but rather aspects like clothing, designs, etc. ranging from these different time periods. At the heart of AoC, we’re in a medieval-inspired world.

What is the inspiration behind the different factions?

Most of the factions you see in AoC are inspired by historical entities, unions, and/or kingdoms. An example would be the most prominent one, the kingdom of Stormhold. This faction is heavily inspired by medieval France, even down to the coat of arms. That’s not to say there aren’t other influencers, like medieval Britain, and other fantasy worlds. Another example would be the Vanghouls, which takes quite a bit of inspiration from the Mayan civilization. Overall, AoC is heavily inspired by historical eras.
