On Athas, elementals are common and take many forms. They often appear near
elemental loci. Many people worship powerful elementals as a personification of pure, undefiled nature. The exception to this is the Elementals of Night, which many view as connected with
Defilement and a force of evil.
Worshipped on Athas
Though deities are not revered or considered an object of worship on Athas, the Elementals are. Worship is not centered on an appeal towards a life after death but rather around a petition to fight defilement and save the current world from destruction. A far cry from the ancient druids and
preservers, those who worship elementals are often viewed as a bit insane by the rest of society.
Individuals who worship elementals are called Elemental Priests and often gain the power to summon lesser versions of the elemental they worship and manipulate the elemental they embody. It is unclear if this is a power that the worshipped elemental grants or one that the priests enforce against its will. Worship often takes the form of offerings that accentuate the elements of nature, for example: burnt offerings for a Fire Elemental, Salted Meats for a Halite Elemental, etc. These offerings are consumed by the elemental which enhances its power temporarily. It is also unknown if the elementals seek worshipers or merely tolerate them; any attempts at communication have been ineffective.
Elemental Lords
The most powerful type of elemental, the Elemental Lord, may manifest at a site near a locus that is unimpeded by defilement for many years. These types of elementals are substantially more powerful than their counterparts and display a rudimentary intelligence and ability to communicate. Such creatures are incredibly rare on Athas, and though many Priests seek to attract one, they are rarely successful. It is unknown how many Elemental Lords exist on Athas or where they exist, but a few have been seen on multiple occasions throughout history and have been documented enough their exitance cannot be completely denied. They have become things of legends and songs, passed down as embodiments of the whims of nature itself, incomnprehensible to mere mortals.
Elementals are naturally weak against defilement and suffer greatly in their presence. As such, they can be vengeful and violent towards any defilement near them.
Here are some of the more common elementals on Athas:
