Thaumaturgy of the Throughways

Highways are weird, not the roads themselves, those are just earth, loam, and gravel, and not all the time, around cities and during rush hour, people seem to bring "normal" with them. I mean the people who live on the roads, long haul truckers, salesmen, it takes a certain kind to live on the road. People can see the strangeness. Road trips are a ritual, you drive somewhere, eat processed food, all to chase an intangible expression of America's sacred ideology.   Eisenhower thought he made the country smaller, he didn't. The law of conservation holds, he took space and created something new. Roads meant to move troops were warped by the very soil upon which they were built. The space Eisenhower created holds America's spirit, exploration, freedom, and naked commerce.
