Discus of Morogyad

The Discus of Morogyad is a purportedly magical relic linked to the pseudohistorical wizard and demigod Morogyad. The discus is said to be in the collection of the Oluz Guildhouse, and therefore of the Commercial Guilds.

Mythology

The Discus of Morogyad is the engraved brass (or possibly copper) disc upon which Morogyad is said to have sat as he flew away from his adopted home in Tyros to Oluz, where he undertook the later stages of his career. A mural on the wall of the Oluz Customhouse depicts the end of this journey in typically vivid Oluzian style, with the disc itself picked out in copper leaf and accentuated with gold leaf.

Description

The Discus is said to be a sheet of brass or copper, precisely circular and exactly four feet in diameter. It is as thin as foil for most of its breadth, the Discus possess a thick elliptical lip of a different, greenish-gold metal - probably some sort of electrum - into which a series of arcane symbols are engraved.

Commentary

The Discus of Morogyad appears to be a means by which metallurgy and words - expressed in the form of the arcane symbols engraved on the lip - can be combined to effect kinesis. It therefore appears to represent a culmination, or at least utilisation, of the ideas hinted at in two books Morogyad is generally accepted to have written in Tyros, Zaryph Mograyn, on the magical properties of metals, and Gon Desryem on the concept of kinesis and the arrangement of objects. It is suspected that the symbols engraved on the Disc combine with its precise metallurgic content to produce the magical effect.   One obvious point of departure for research on this point is The Ramoros Fragments, said to be chunks of the stone disc upon which Morogyad rode home to Ramoros after his tutelage in magic on the island of Kobolon. That disc served a similar purpose to the surviving, metal Discus of Morogyad, and the inscriptions upon it could well be comparable. Embedded in a cliff-face to the north of Ramoros, the fragments are inscribed with symbols, though what those symbols are cannot be ascertained from sea level, and the fragments do not form a complete disc, suggesting the set is incomplete.   Another point of difficulty in researching this is that the Disc of Morogyad has not been exhibited in living memory. Spokespeople for the Oluz Guildhouse consistently confirm the existence of the artefact and its presence in their treasury, but these statements can only be assumed to be accurate since they refuse to show it to anybody. Working from artistic representations of the Disc found in the Guildhouse is of limited use as the symbols shown on the Disc are seldom consisted from one picture to the next.
