The Valkyrie

Aelinari legend tells of a mysterious maiden tending to the most valiant dead after terrible battles. Known as the Valkyrie, or Saint Sembria, she is said to appear near the end of battles, braving the battlefield to carry the dead and dying to safety, then to remain by the side of a single chosen warrior most prepared to accept his fate with dignity, consoling and blessing him.   Most often described as an ashen-skinned young woman garbed as a priestess of Alassol, Sembria's appearance has been reported several times over the centuries. Lashunta are not known for irrational superstition, so few of these accounts are dismissed, although a lone soldier among many spotting Sembria is often suspected to be suffering from a head injury. Many doubt a single individual truly being responsible for all of them, however, for even the longest-lived races could not live for as long as the tales of Sembria have been told. The most common theory is that the true Sembria inspired others to take on her guise and mimic her actions, but she is still honored for the deeds of all of them on the basis of the example she set. This interpretation is substantiated by the cloak and cowl she is said to wear; a lashunta, half-elf, or human woman could equally easily appear as Sembria, especially in the chaos of a battle's aftermath.   However much truth there is to the tales, the Valkyrie holds a definite place in Aelinari culture, and "Sembria ease your passing" is a common blessing and farewell to soldiers departing on a particularly risky expedition. The Order of Saint Sembria, an Alassolan organization dedicated to caring for the terminally ill or wounded, is named for her.
