Kingdom of Lichenwood (/ˈkɪŋdəm ɒv ˈlɪkənwʊd/)
The Kingdom of Lichenwood extends to east all the way to the border between the Western Borderlands and the Heartlands. The people trust explicitly in the legitimacy of the ruling faction, even if there have been individuals who have fallen to corruption in its storied history.
Lichenwood has been enjoying a period of stability in recent years. However, a recent rash of banditry has disrupted trade and has a noticeable effect on the treasury. In response, King Gadreith has established a new bureaucracy responsible for launching an inquisition into the thefts and who, or what, are behind them.

Culture
The main stock of the Lichenwoodsmen are the descendants of the northern tribe that originally settled the area in the ancient past. However, over the centuries, that line mixed with the peoples of the western kingdoms of the Heartlands, and various demihuman peoples like Elves, Dwarves, and even Half-orcs have left their own kingdoms and tribes to live within the Kingdom of Lichenwood.
History
500 years ago, Lichenwood went through a decade or more of widespread poverty. They royal family was blamed for squandering the treasury and they were dethroned in a bloody coup. It took less than 5 years to replenish the treasury and combat the impoverished state of the kingdom. No-one ever learned, however, where all the money from the treasury had gone.
Less than 200 years ago, the eastern portion of the Kingdom of Lichenwood seceded. The area was technically part of the Heartlands anyways, and its people felt more of an affinity to that region. It wouldn't be long before the new independent nation was absorbed into the forming of Isfernhold'ar.
In all the long history of the Kingdom of Lichenwood, Anima's Sorrowwood has never been settled, and it has always been avoided. The stories tell that the wood is cursed. Sunlight itself shies away from broaching the thick canopy.
While the reasons have been lost to history, the noble families of the kingdom have always placed their firstborn into the clergy; except for the royal family whose firstborn is heir, but their second born is required to join the clergy.
