As the saying goes: my house, my rules. Please make sure you are all familiar and happy with these before you come to my table.
Your DM
As a DM, I fancy myself the Overlord of whatever crystal sphere we happen to be playing in. I make my rulings on the spot and my word is law - but I can be convinced to change my mind. This will usually be if a player presents a good argument or a character does somethings where I decide 'Yep, that works'.
I'm afraid to say I highly favour ROLEplay over ROLLplay. I welcome MinMaxing and optimised characters at my table but I have been known to let a player kill an NPC with a spoon or talk a dragon into parting with a piece of its hoard. Hard, but doable.
I mix prep and improvisation when creating a game. The settings you will enter will be shaped by your decisions to a point but there are some things that will happen regardless as a group of adventurers cannot control everything that happens in a crystal sphere: that is a power restricted to the Overlords.
Game Expectations
Respect everyone at the table
I'll share a few sayings you may or may not have heard before...
- Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
- Your freedom stops where that of others begin.
- We are all equal in the fact that we are all different.
If there is an issue players cannot resolve between themselves, please fell free to contact me to mediate. Having said that, I reserve the right to refuse anyone a spot at my table, with no particular reason given.
Dice Rolls
Only I can call for a dice roll. So you need to tell me what you want to do, and I will tell you what dice to roll if any. That is all.
All combat rolls will be public, with the sole exception of Death Saves. Skills checks and other rolls can be made privately if you want but the results must be shared with your DM.
Rule Debates
In game, you can call a quick halt to present a short case against one of my rulings. I will then decide if you have made your case, if my original ruling stands, or if a compromise has been achieved. This should take no longer than 2 minutes. Longer debates should be shelved for outside Game Time.
Players' Attention
I understand that we all have lives that sometimes get in the way. But please try to keep your attention on the game where possible. If something is likely to come up - or does come up unexpectedly - please notify the others at the table. Be warned that if you're not paying attention, your character may suddenly develop a level of exhaustion.
Absences
Please tell the table with 24 hours notice if you can't make a game. This will allow me to decide if the game goes ahead, a one-shot should be played instead, or the game should be cancelled. Too many unannounced absences will result in you being asked to leave the table.
In-Game Rules
Learn from Experience
Epic misses and successes will allow a character to reflect on them at a later date to try and see what they did wrong or right. After 10 Crit Fails, a character develops a new feat following that self-reflection. The same for Crit Successes.
I prepped for that
You can spend a point of inspiration to “remember” your character prepared for just the type of situation you find yourself in. The preparation in question could be buying an item or talking with a known NPC to get additional intel. How the character prepares will determine if gold is spent and/or dice rolled.
Combat Fumble
A critical miss in combat will leave you open to attacks of opportunities by your opponents.
Penalty Success
If a character misses a check by three or less, you will be offered the chance to succeed but with a penalty, or have a negative consequence associated with your success. The penalty will be decided by myself and is non-negotiable.
