The Laws of Thalass

I would say the world of Thalass operates by standard fantasy rules. The natural world tries to follow its natural course but with magic being a known fact of the world there are many aspects of the world that can only be explained by magical interference. One example would be the Elven city of Dor-Lómin which floating through the sky by use of ancient elven communion spells.

Cosmology

In the time before, the gods came together and created the world that has come to be known as Thalass.   Before vast records were available there was a split between the gods. The two factions that arose shared different opinions on how the future of the world and its inhabitants. This culminated in a great war between the gods and their champions. This at the time was commonly referred to as the Divergence or the splitting of the pantheon. From this point on the rooster of the gods was split into two factions, the first being the Prime Deities that wished to preserve the world and its people, and the second being the Betrayer Gods which wish to cleanse the world and start anew. It was during this great war that blessings and boons were granted to the champions of the gods as they aided in the battle. These would become known as Relics of Primordium, ancient artifacts from the time of primordial strife between gods. Eventually the Prime Deities won out over the Betrayer Gods and sealed them away.   From this point the world grew and developed for over a thousand years. It was after this period of great growth and spread that the Great Flood drowned the world and many of its inhabitants. It was from this point on that the world became commonly referred to as Thalass. The cause of this flood is unknown to al but the gods and they have deemed it a secret to be kept.

Principal Geography & Features

Thalass is a world of water. Over 90% of the surface is covered in water. From what is found beneath the waves it is clear that at some point the world was not always submerged in water. There is evidence of civilizations long before that seemed to have been drowned ages ago.   As for the bits of land that can be found. Most if not all of these are volcanic islands that have formed over years and years of volcanic activity. Some of these islands have grown to their limits as the volcanos supporting this have gone extinct or have been dormant for ages. These islands are now used as some of the few places surface races can call home. Of these islands the largest is the Isle of Crita, where Educas the capital of the Juta Empire is located. This island is the largest stretch of land in all of Thalass and is home to the largest volcano in the world, Mt. Taras which is an active volcano that is long over due its next eruption.   From there other notable geographical aspects of Thalass is the, God Hand. This is a formation of stone and earth in the shape of a hand that holds the city of Hithlum within its palm. The residences of Hithlum claim that when the Great Flood was about to reach the walls of their city and drown them all they called out to Bahamut their patron god begging to be spared. Moved by the steadfast belief of the citizens Bahamut spared the city as the Platinum Dragon commanded the earth to raise it up over the rising waters. The city now stands over 100 stories in the air nestled within the palm of the God Hand.   Finally there is the known floating island city of Dor-Lómin and the rumored moving islands. Dor-Lómin is an elven city floats across the skies of Thalass. This is in contrast to the rumored moving islands of Thalass. Many sailors claim that they have spotted islands that move on their own and in some cases disappear beneath the waters right before their eyes.

Initial Active Setting

Locking down the initial size of Thalass is difficult. This is mostly due to the world being 90% water which means distance will be mostly boat travel. This means places are further apart because the distance boats can travel is faster and farther than someone could walk in a day. However for the map I have planned to draw this will scale accordingly since all travel is uniform. So places will only seem a short distance away but that is because they are only a short distance by boat. In terms of that farthest one might travel I would say 1 month would likely be the farthest distance between any two points. Most locations are closer than this ranging between 1-2 weeks travel by boat, and even for those locations that are farther there are plenty of small and medium sized islands that offer rest points and a change in scenery.
