Nachtmair - The Dread Eclipse (Nakt-myre)

Nachtmair is one of the few confirmed corporeal deities and is often referred to as the God of Dreams, or the God of Nightmares.
It lives beneath the surface of the nearest and smallest moon Lune, there it sleeps in a state of hibernation; Occasionally however it awakes. When it does it is clearly visible from the surface of the world; for the duration black bulbous flesh squeezes through the cracks and craters covering Lune's surface, sometimes enveloping it completely, long black tentacles grow from the mounds of darkness, reaching out into space they slowly writhe. This is known as a 'Black moon' or a 'Dread moon'.
This waking period can last for weeks or years, when it begins no one knows how long it will go on for until it is over. During Nachtmair's waking periods it has a disturbing influence on the minds of all the creatures below. They are plagued with fearful nightmares for the duration, over time the effects of these images and the effects of poor sleep take there toll on the worlds populace flaring tempers and bringing old grudges and paranoias to bubble to the surface. No one is immune and it effects every walk of society, causing civil, social and political unrest. All know of the effects, all know they must temper their reactions, but it is easier said than done, and the smallest spark can cause violence, hatred and war.
No one really knows what causes this effect whether it's an intentional act or an unfortunate side effect, for there are many stories about Nachtmair. Some say when it sleeps it dreams our nightmares for us, saving us from the perpetual terror our minds would otherwise inflict upon us. Other tales say it feeds off the negative emotion of mortal minds and awakes only when it is time to feed. Any attempt to commune with it leads to very little useful information, and those that do are often so overwhelmed by the experience they die instantly, those that don't are riddled with psychosis and night terrors for the remainder of their lives. All we know is that it is sentient and is aware of the effect it has upon us; Why, whether intentional and whether it cares are completely unknown and are subjects which are wildly speculated upon. Whatever it's reasoning you can guarantee that it's stirring will be accompanied by major spikes in war, political strife, isolationism, violence and crime throughout the realms of all three material planes.
