United Federation of Planets

The United Federation of Planets is an interstellar organization that represents an alliance of cultures and worlds dedicated to cooperation, mutual benefit, and the peaceful exploration of space. It was founded in the Earth year 2161, formalized by the signing of the Federation Charter by representatives of the United Earth Government, Andoria, Vulcan, Tellar, and the colonies of Alpha Centauri. This charter laid out a structure of government consisting of a legislative body (the Federation Council) comprised of representatives from each member planet that would meet periodically to pass laws, and an executive body headed by an elected President serving a limited term to enforce those laws and oversee the smooth, continuous operation of the government. The Federation superseded the Coalition of Planets, an organization which was essentially a mutual defense treaty arrangement among the member worlds.
