Script of Deneir

Among the most ancient artifacts on Teurram are the Scripts of Deneir, journal entries written by the god himself. As conflict rose between the Pantheon and the Umbrals, Deneir began to keep record of the goings on throughout the war and the events that followed to populating of the material plane. Deneir attempted to share this knowledge with the mortals, but the Umbrals, Cyric specifically, grabbed a hold of the diary and tore it to pieces, scattering the writings across the continent of Teurram. In great haste before the Dividing Barrier rose, and shortly after the Second Beginning, Deneir orchestrated the salvaging and protection of as many of the Scripts as he could to allies on the plane, but many were lost, or fell to Cyric's minions. Since then, each holder of a Script has wondered much about the past and kept things quiet, waiting for the opportune moment to take action with what they know to be a powerful record.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Though they appear as ordinary papers torn from a journal, these scripts are obviously magical. The words written on the page appear as some unintelligible language to their reader, until upon recognition of the reader the words begin to shift into a commonly understood language. Scholars believe the original scripts are written in an archaic form of celestial, sharing some similarities to those characters passed down from an age long passed. Being writings of the god of writing himself, the words are enchanted to reveal themselves only to beings native or descended from the upper planes, and forever remaining a mystery to fey, fiends, devils, and other alien creatures.
An enchantment also protects the scripts from being destroyed. They cannot be torn, burnt, or otherwise destroyed by non-magical or even mediocre magical means. A powerful aura of divination and abjuration magic hangs on the scripts for those who can sense such magics. That aura is a particularly potent form of magic that mortal casters are not capable of reproducing, though that won't stop some from trying.

Significance

These records contain histories lost to the mortal races of the material plane. Those that have been uncovered are enigmatic, speaking of major events that are unfamiliar to even the most learned readers. Whoever recovers enough of these scripts could piece together the history of existence on the material plane, and thus control the historical narrative of the world.
Item type

Rarity
Legendary. These scripts are extremely rare, seeming to be scattered journal entries from the god of writing himself, Deneir.

Cursed Scripts

Among the many scripts, there are those that have been tainted by Cyric's magic. Any attempts made to detect these Scripts magically within a ten mile radius deal 6d10 psychic damage to the caster, and gives them disadvantage on constitution saving throws until they complete seven long rests away from the influence of the cursed Script.
