Ruminations on the Feywild: Gates Among the Material Plane

The following are written from my firsthand accounts in my travels between our Material world and the Faerie, or Fey, realm with which it is so intricately tied.
— Archmage Arannis Lathalas, Warden and Scholar of the Feywild

Planar Gates

In all my travels I have encountered many places where the veil grows thin between us and the Fey. This thinning is not a guarantee of travel to the Faerie realm, but it is certainly easier for those who know what signs to follow. From my experiences and collected stories, it would also seem the whim of particularly powerful Fey creatures, hereto regarded as Archfey, can also draw humankind in more easily. The following is my up to date list of known gates to the Feywild.
  • Cair Silva, Lake Silva, Dol'Deren, the Forn
  • Spring of Anam, Idrik, the Laelands
  • Vernal Pools, South of Karstock, Bhaerynde
  • Landroval's Aerie, Jade Isles
  • South Eastern regions of the Forn
  • Mielikki's Crest, north of Dol'Deren, the Forn
  • The Mourning Meadows, Varune

The Archfey

I find it best to avoid these capricious and all powerful beings if at all possible, but if it can't be avoided flattery is your friend, and emotion your companion.
— Lathalas

The Summer Court

Just as dangerous, though admittedly preferable is this group of cheery Archfey. They stand for what we might consider positive emotions, though many will mistake for good. They should be regarded carefully and with much respect, and also much merriment, if the mood suits them at the particular hour you come across them. Most notable in my travels have been:
  • Titania, Queen of the Summer Court
  • Oberon, The Green Lord
  • Dana (and her Tuatha de Danann - roughly translates from Sylvan "People of the goddess Danu"
  • Verenestra, the Princess of Flowers
  • Falias de Danann
  • Murias de Danann
  • Gorias de Danann
  • Lurue, the Unicorn Queen

The Gloaming Court

More dangerous, and usually more terrible are the unseelie Fey, and their Gloaming Court. I'd associate these lords with less favorable traits, though evil is not entirely accurate either. I've had encounters with the following of them, though I'd rather forget them:
  • The Queen of Air and Darkness (name unknown)
  • Finias de Danann
  • Kannoth, the Sanguine
  • Relkath of the Infinite Branches
  • Nana Chriona, Mother of Witches
  • Neifion, Lord of Bats
  • Hyrsam, Prince of Fools

Theories and Hypotheses

It should first be noted to any curious in travel to the Feywild that time passes differently on those not of Fey ancestry. We elves seem to be closely related to Fey creatures, though how far back that lineage goes I do not know. That ancestry does help with the temporal differences others might experience, as well as potential memory loss.

The Feywild seems to be a near parallel to the Material, though not all features are the same. Some features appear exaggerated in their realm. Travel through known gates is not guaranteed, and can depend on a number of factors, though the lunar cycle seems to have a particularly strong affect. Stories seem to point to a connection with the god of wild magic, Silvanus.

Purpose

This tome, recovered from Darkwater Lake in the Shadowfell of Varune, contains Lathalas's extensive notes and experiences during his travels in the Feywild, including his musings on its function and purpose, planar gates on the Material Plane, as well as accounts of significant Archfey.
