Triton

Champions of the waves, lords of the underseas, and all-around fish people. The Triton are the most enigmatic of the god’s creations. They have a long history of piracy, bloodshed, and tribalism. They are devoted to Ulmar and the ocean itself.

Origin

The Triton were born into bloodshed. Their appearance was characterized not by a divine prophecy or a sprawling act of god, but instead sailors noticing dead fish, dolphins, and whales getting caught in their fishing nets. They would investigate further, before discovering a race of violent mauraders had taken control of the seas: the Triton. The Triton innately knew who they served: Ulmar, the god of the tides. Most Triton were sworn to her indominitable will from the moment of their creation.
The other gods have never taken interest in the Triton. They will delegate all of their problems to Ulmar, and don't seem to have had any real part in their creation. If Zanu is ever asked about them, he will fall silent, and sometimes revoke power from that particular follower altogether.

Description

The Triton of Tetraverium are aquatic, bulky creatures. They stand at roughly 6 to 7 feet tall, and weigh between 140 to 240 pounds. They can live up to 200 years. Triton usually have dark blue skin, resembling the seas. They tend to have scales, finns, and gills. Their hair tends to be seaweed green or a wretched dark blue. Some Triton more closely resemble fish, with large, glassy eyes or the many teeth of a shark.

Socialization

After ruling the seas throughout the Era of Great Waves, the Triton would slowly be forced to share the seas with other species once the tides calmed. It would be over a thousand years before the other lineages began to actually recognize and record sightings of the Triton, leaving them more of an urban legend than anything else. Slowly, they would be recorded into the annals of history, where they faced harsh scrutiny. The Forge Empire would eventually include them in their description of monsters, and they faced violent persecution during the Titan Wars. The Elven Houses would mostly ignore them, with House Hydronus often competing with them for naval supremacy. They would be accepted into Zinshali, and many would live their permanently. Nerukudo and Sunkangden would misclassify them as different kinds of spirits for years, before eventually accepting them among the ranks of mortalkind.
The Triton were the children of Ulmar, and they were born knowing it. They were territorial and blunt people who spilled a lot of blood early into their existence. While they were not inherently violent, it seemed to be the solution they grasped quickly, as they were prone to temperamental moods. While not every Triton was a killer, they were all plagued with dispositions as violent and unstable as the tides. The Triton revered their mother, Ulmar, and worshiped him thanklessly. This would translate over time into a standardized form of worship all its own - and a markedly tribal one. It involved blood sacrifice, murder, and fishing. Lots of fishing.
The Triton feel more than an emotional connection to the waves: they have physical control over the tides. By lifting their arms, they can send boats rushing forward or have the water swallow a man whole. This control over water is not absolute, but it is powerful. A Triton with enough power is said to be able to calm the seas with just a look, or summon a tempest with their screams. Some more superstitious travelers will refuse not to sail without a Triton onboard, or at least one’s blessing. This has led many to take up careers as mercenaries, priests, and pirates.
Many Triton would build societies deep below the waves. Often lit with bioluminescence or magic, these underwater towns would grow into cities, and over time the majority of the Triton race would find their way underwater. Here, they could not be persecuted by those who roamed the surface, and they only had the great creatures of the deep to fear. Unfortunately, this peace could not last: the incursions of the Demon Lord Juiblex, both during the Demonic Cataclysm and again two thousand years later, would see these great underwater cities as one of their prime targets.

Living in Tetraverium

Today, the majority of Triton live above the surface. Many are old enough to recall their underwater cities being destroyed by the tidal rage of the Demon Lord Juiblex. Their species has suffered as the seas have suffered, and some haven’t even been on the water their entire lives. Finding themselves cornered, many Triton have regressed into their most violent habits.
The Tribal Triton society is as dangerous and bloody as it has ever been. Those who choose to take to the seas, should they avoid the wrath of the tides or the Demon Lord, often face the anger of the Triton. The Triton remains one of the last vestiges of an older pirate society. Now that the Scepter has conquered the seas, the Triton live in poorer areas, hiding from their watchful eye, continuing a history of plundering and death. This is all a part of their worship of Ulmar. They praise him constantly, hoping that with enough blood, he will dispose of Juiblex for them.
|The Triton have become as enraptured in the ‘Ulmar Debate’ as any of her other worshippers. To them, as his children, it is an even more high-stakes issue. The question of whether or not Ulmar is a God or Goddess is reflected in their very identity, as male and female Triton try to identify with her. Triton society is one of few to struggle with gender roles, and gender warfare is a common sight.
