Creating your level 20 and their empire
Making Your Level 20:
- When making your level 20, consider where they got their magical items and wealth, what they found in dark dungeon depths, or perhaps were given by heads of their faith, maybe they defeated a powerful foe to gain their blessed blade?
- Consider carefully how their experiences will translate into them running an empire, where they scorned by this empire in the past and now tax the shit out of it or one particular lord? Perhaps they have a loyalty to one town or people living inside the empire? Maybe they despise a neighboring empire or have a rivalry with one of their old team and enjoy contests often to prove their supremacy
- You can and probably should work with your fellow players to see how your level 20's interact with each other and what history they possibly have, you can do the same to work with your DM to make up lore and events that could have happened in the past that have shaped your level 20 into the person they are today
- Your character will be a part of a noble house, as that is how empires are run, perhaps they married into an established house? Or made their own? maybe their house is more of a ramshackle collection of friends and followers? All up to you, but they do have a house. Each house must contain the following positions
- As for your real character, its possible they hold a council position in their house, most noble houses do try and have their own family hold such positions, but as you are only level 3 this is unlikely more than just a ceremonial role. If you do hold such, then once the game actually starts you will have to give it up to go on your quest. As for any siblings you may have, consider their age in relation to their level, if they are similar age then its likely they are a similar level as you at the start of the game, but unlike you, they can have other reasons as to why they hold the station that they do, perhaps they have an uncanny aptitude for the blade or magic, maybe they are blessed by a God or Goddess or are able to easily sway large crowds or skeptical people, feel free to come up with interesting ideas for why they may hold their station if they are at lower levels, or feel free to make them stronger if they are older.
- Ruler: This is your level 20 character
Champion: Their chosen champion, as described below, they will be the ones to settle all disputes in the name of their liege
Economy: The person in charge of the monetary and economic status and abilities of the level 20, the keeper of the treasury.
Magic: The leading mage in charge of magical defenses, attack and anything else the level 20 might require that requires a talented magician. Also likely the leader of all mages in the empire
Military: The person in charge of the military of the house and probably of even the entire empire, the tactical genius responsible for mustering men-at-arms and rallying the levies and organizing the parades, as not many battles happen nowadays, their role is diminished and most of the time they are glorified talent scouts for champions.
Diplomatic: The person responsible for setting up the dinners, weddings, parties and meetings with inter-empire noble houses and extra-national noble houses, keeping the peasants happy and organizing holidays and other such internal and external affairs
Religion: The priest, priestess or similar office is in charge of the state-endorsed religion, they organize the ceremonies, the rituals and religious observances. Providing healing and insight into the will of the Gods, they preach to the peasants and sanction holy acts of violence and so on. They are generally the highest ranking member of the entire church.
- As each empire is now run by close friends who fought, bled and possibly even died with one another, the empires now all enjoy an age of peace without any large-scale conflicts to disrupt them. Many debates and problems still arise however, but instead of conscripting the peasants and bleeding the fields red with hundreds of dead and dying soldiers, now nearly all conflicts are resolved through the use of champions. Each house and nation has a champion, as well as several backups, which they use to compete in various tournaments, challenges and duels, beating an enemy champion means victory for your side and cause, while losing means forfeiting whatever claim you were making that caused this clash of champions to arise. The lords of these empires very rarely take to the field themselves, and only against each other in mostly more friendly type duels, so instead they train, teach and cultivate their students and squires to battle the opposing lord's students and squires for the enforcement of their will.
- You are not only allowed, but encouraged to come up with additional houses and nobles for your character's empire, these are people your character has placed in positions of power, has deemed too dangerous to not be kept under close supervision, or perhaps need to be guided closely to ensure their maximum potential, all of that is up to you, but normally there are 7 houses that each work towards one specific goal or have a single purpose within the empire:
- Ruling: The ruler of this particular noble house
- Champions: The Champion of the house, as described above
- Economy: The one in charge of balancing the coffers, as well as collecting and paying taxes to their liege
- Magic: The person in charge of magical research, crafting and other such things, as described above
- Military: The person in charge of all matters military, as described above
- Diplomatic: The person in charge of maintaining good ties to the liege, other houses and so on, as described above
- Religion: The person in charge of religious fervor and more, as described above
