The Lost Legion
Forests turn to swampy pits, and trench lines spontaneously form as well structured lines of armored, moss covered warriors shamble fourth. This battalion of the damned is slow, vacant, and resigned, as these undead warriors are horror made manifest. They are not like average zombies however, as these undead nightmares seem to possess some form of intelligence left as they shamble in a dreamless, soulless state.
Structure
In life, the Legion of the Burned Tree was lead by one General Victor Sharp, nicknamed "The Mighty Oak". He led his troops in some of the greatest siege and defensive maneuvers, being able to turn a useless pile of dirt into a place more defensible then the mightiest castle. Under him were his many officers and bishops who helped lead his armies and to give them the faith to continue. it is said their faith was so strong they could live through even the most nightmarish injuries.
Now in death, it is unkown how many are left, but it is feared far too many remain. It is rumored that Victor is now an undead zombie like thing, inside the great bastion in the Blood Swamp as he leads his armies all across Nilush.
History
During the mass retreat of the Crusade of Light, one Ashenfeld Knight Legion stood defiant, the Legion of the Burned Tree. They would make a stand in the Blood Swamps, given the simple order to hold the line against any that came through. They built a sprawling network of trenches, barracks, and supply depots as far as they eye could see. They would wage a bloody war, but be unbroken as they allowed the rest of the crusades forces to retreat safely. It seemed that this battalion was truly blessed, and may even be able to restart a push into the Deadlands. This dream would die as it is said suddenly some horrifying, wailing, maddening cry would descend onto the camp. It would shriek and howl mind emptying and soul snatching wails as the legion was put into a deep, vacant sleep. The legion was laid low not by an army of undead, but by some unknowable, hateful entity that placed a thousand and more curses upon each and every one of them.
After this, nothing was heard of the legion, not a single one apparently survived this ordeal as the church would consider them lost and martyr them, building a grand display with the name of every last member and a great statue within the city of Murton. However, reports in 4225 would tell of a horrifying sight. The legion was not just killed, it was turned into some horrifying form of damnable undeath, as they set multiple towns alight, before scattering in well organized armies into the many forests of Nilush. The Church of the Flame would scrub the legions name from all records, the monument was brought down and all names scrubbed.
Despite what the Church of the Flame, and the rest of wider society may want to believe, this army is very much alive. It shuffles and grinds its rusted, moss covered weapons soullessly as they seem to now fight for the very darkness they once fought against, as it is said the General of the legion remains deep in the Blood Swamps, able to magically communicate and even see through its officers to wreck havoc all across Nilush with its vast horde of seemingly unending undead warriors.
Territories
After their scattering, it has become evident that they are seemingly able to "shift" their way deep in the forests of Nilush. This makes them incredibly dangerous as they are able to move almost unimpeded across the continent. Whenever they show up in a forest, the forest will quickly become a haunted, horrifying swamp, and trench networks will be formed as they will gather forces before shambling fourth to wage their terrible war on the living with uncaring, unfeeling precision.
