The Dark and Malefic Magics in The World of Tertara

The bigots and purists will tell you that to go past the established rules is to bring doom. They are fools, willingly and gleefully abandoning the purist of power and knowledge unbound. Why must one shackle themselves like a slave to appease the heaving masses of bigots and ignorant? Why must the minority bow to the majority? These questions and more are the many reasons some may practice what are considered the Dark Arts of magic, or the Malefic Arts.   Before anything, it must be said that in truth, there is no functional diffrence between "Dark" Magic and "Standard" Magic. Some scholars have debated that the definiton of Dark Magic is any magic that disrupts the natural way of life, takes and corrupts life around the area, and summoning unnatural things. However, how is an evoking spell summoning a being of pure elemental fire or air any more "natural" than a demon. How is the summoning of a demon any way diffrent than summoning an angel? Sure the steps and ingridents may differ, but the end is the same: a being not native to this plane is pulled into this plane, either permenantly or for a brief time. So, despite what scholars may argue, there is no "functional, mechanical" diffrence between the Malefic Arts and Standard Magic.

Those Who are Damned

There are several types of magic practioners and schools of magic that are considered Dark and Malefic. They are the arts that most of wider society in the world has agreed are "morally" bankrupt and should not be practiced.
  • Necromancy: Perhaps the magic that people first think of when discussing the Malefic Arts, Necromancy and Necromancers are widely regarded as a horrific and disturbing path one may take. The manipulation of negative energy can corrupt the surronding area, and bodies are danced upon strings as souls are harvested and forced to endure the rot and decay. Commonly one may go into necormancy out of a desire to live, or bring back a lost loved one. Make no mistake however, while there can be "moraly good" necromancers (or at least ones that arent motivated by demented ideals) the art of raising the dead is widely regarded as horrific and evil.
  • Sangromancy: Sangromancy is an art learned from the vampires of ancient days, and anything to do with vampirism is a loaded topic in itself. Sangromancy and Sangromancers learn to harness blood itself, the fluid of life, to bend it to their will. Using it to rend foes asunder, drain the blood out of their victims to sate their own vitality, or puppeting them in a horrific display as the unforunate soul is forced to move against their will.
  • Eldritch/Outer Magic: This type of magic is another common image many think of when reffering to dark mages. This magic involves the summoning and utilization of magics from the unkowable, eldritch dimension of the Void Realm. It involves harnessing these unnatural energies in their purest form, for while magic itself is an eldritch like force, it is diluted to still make some sense in our realm. Eldritch Magic is the use of undilluted, pure magic, and it is a warping, maddening thing that can twist flesh into horrific mockeries of life. It is horror, and few can use it without going mad.
  • Psionics: Psionic magic is the use of mental will rather than magical force. It is extremly rare, and those that use it are few and far between. However those that do use it tend to be Mind Flayers and insane, psychotic spelcasters, and so it has a negative reputation, if anyone knows of it at all. It is widely considered "unnatural" amongst magical circles.
  • Infernal Magic: This magic is the most simple in explination, it is the usage of magic gained or empowering in some way to demons and the forces of hell. Diabloists and the like summon demons in exchange for power or their souls, and use them for their own twisted means. The usage of demonic magic is perhaps the gravest sin any mage can commit, and as such nearly across the entire world one should best remain hidden from the world if they wish to practice such arts.
