Biological Traits

Kitsune are said to be spirits, and so have the ability the shapeshift from a fox into a human. This human form can either be fully identical to a human or a human with fox ears, and their many tails, which kitsune seem to find the latter more comfortable. Kitsune grow multiple tails over their life, but until they reach adulthood they only have one tail, and will only get more as they continue on through life. Due to their spirit like nature, they are very magically attuned and all are able to at least cast minor magic and illusions. They are also said to be able to cast magic that can give blessings of protection to people, summon balls of lights, and  summon columns of light to fight off their enemies.

Naming Traditions

A kitsune will have at least two names at any time. The first is their true fey name and can be used to command the kitsune to do anything, or so its said at least. Willingly giving over their true name is a symbol of absolute trust. Their second name is a poetic or literal name that describes one of their traits, professions, or simply a cultural name that the kitsune found amusing. Although it is not unheard of to change their name, they usually keep the first name they chose

Kitsune are an egalitarian people, though it seems that male kitsune are somewhat more uncommon than females.

History

No one knows the history of the kitsune, much like many of the other creatures related to the fey. The Kantō seem to believe that they have always been there, since the dawn of time. The spirits of the land taking the form of mischievous foxes. Kitsune have occasionally cropped up several times in the history of the Kantōnese, with many warriors either interacting with kitsune or traveling with a kitsune companion. To this day they remain a rather mysterious but respected race of the land of Kantō

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Delighting in all sorts of trickery, mischief, and general nosiness, those who know of the kitsune regard them as annoying, but usually harmless in their intentions. Most kitsune are fascinated with the adventurers they meet, often joining them in their travels to try and satisfy their inquisitive nature. Because of this spirit of curiosity they are wonderfully suited to the adventuring life. They are highly sought after as servants of powerful spirits and gods - usually as spies and messengers   They hold a special place in Kantō society, for many of the wives of the many emperors throughout Kantō's history have been kitsune thanks to the ancient promise with the kitsune Hirata and the Emperor Otagi Koretomo. There is even an entire samurai clan made up of many kitsune who have taken up the way of the warrior
