Gilles d'Allee, First King and Founder of Vebastonne

The Great Uniter, The Chosen of the Twins, Slayer of Monsters, The Perfect Knight, The King of Kings

There is truly only few moments in the history of this cursed world, where a man of purest virtue and honor exists. While many will think to the Pureborn Hero, Chosen One of the Gods, the Vestoni instead look to Gilles. Gilles was the first king of Vebastonne, who begun his humble origins as a dutiful knight of the Dukedom of Marroux. He was destined for greatness even from an early age, supposedly unhorsing a fully fledged knight when he was but 13. However his greatest feat would be had at around the age of 20, where he alone charged down the largest dragons ever recorded in Vestoni history (and even the rest of the worlds history) named Malibag. The fighting was fierce indeed, but eventually, Gilles would plunge his blade, spurned on by his virtue and honor, into the ignoble heart of the great beast, and slew it outside the village it did endanger.   Earning this respect, he would seek to fight off the many monsters destroying the land of Vebastonne. Due to the local duke of Marroux being slain, and his son one Constans le Marroux being young and inexperienced, Gilles would offer himself to lead the effort to free the land for the forces of Marroux, swearing that he will free the realm or die. The people flocked to his banner, and he would lead his army to battle the monsters. However even though he eventually united with the dukes of Clamont (one Louin de Clamont) and Baciennes (one Rolan de Baciennes) the monsterous hordes were many, and simply too many to fight effectively. Each victory was a measure in loss, as the forces of Giles simply could not withstand this war of attrition. Morale would also be low as it was said the king was dead, and Courzieu was besieged. Gilles prayed for a miracle to happen, and amazingly, it did.   Lilia, the Lady of the Lake, and The Great Enchantress, Morgina, would appear to him before a lake, and even when confronted by such power, he simply asked but one question: "My ladies, wouldst thee bless my men?". This act showed to the goddesses his unwavering humility that he would worry about his men before him alone. This is what led to him being chosen to wield the magical sword Aetherius, and allowed to sup from the grail. With this new found power, he would liberate Courzieu in a great battle, challenging the great barbarian king Bior Rognvaldsson to a duel and did behead him. With this act, the dukes of Vebastonne would kneel, as in the throne room Lilia and Morgina did appear again, and imparted the ideals of chivalry onto Giles. They would also give the grail to the other dukes, making them the next Lilian Knights, and would then depart, swearing that as long as they keep to their virtue and faith, that Vebastonne would never fall.   Gilles would then go on to marry Lady Aquitaine le Veston, and then lead a campaign to liberate the rest of Vebastonne. The fighting was fierce, but it was done with honor and valor. However, tragedy would strike as during the last great battle against hordes of demons and cultist, a single arrow flew through the legions of soldiers, and did strike Gilles in the chest, unhorsing him. This arrow was said to be cursed with every curse the despicable gods of Hell would invoke upon it and though the Twins blessing was strong, he was mortally wounded and dying. The battle died out around him as the demons were routed, and his round table companions would be in a state of pure misery as they held their fallen king in their arms. Gilles would lay there, and tell them of things they must do, which they all took to heart. His last two requests, were that he were to be taken to a nearby lake, and for his sword to be thrown into the same lake that he drank from the grail.   Gilles's body was brought to the nearby lake, where amazingly, a great boat moved by swans would be there, and on the boat was the Lady of the Lake, and several fair maidens in white veils. Lilia would explain that she was to take Gilles body to her realm, the magical island of Avallon, where he would rest until Vebastonne needed him most. So, weeping and praying for their friend, the knights of the round table laid him gently upon the boat, and watched it sail away into the mist of the lake, and was never seen again. Taking the loss hard Erec de Bar, one of Gilles's closest friends, for a day did not return the sword Aetherius to the lake, as he did not want to lose the last thing to remember Gilles by. However, knowing that not doing so would be spitting in the face of all he stood for, he did ride down to the lake and would throw the sword into the river, where the beautiful hand of Lilia reached out and caught the sword, before it disappeared into the lake. The sword was later said to be returned to the stone, and would be found again by the next king, one Edward the II.   So it is, that Gilles was forever remembered as the first and greatest king in Vestoni history. So it is that though he is mourned as dead, many still hold faith that he will one day return, and with his return, Vebastonne will be saved for all eternity.
