Displacer Beast

Basic Information

Anatomy

Feline like creature, with six legs and a pair of tentacles sprouting from their shoulders.

Biological Traits

Displacer beasts (also known as Dirlagraun) are a bizzare creature that now is almost commonplace to hear of. Said to have come from the feywild and been raised by fairies, they have since come to our world and slipped their leashes. Displacer beasts are similar to large feline hunters like panthers, though they possess a striking "mane" of sorts along their spine and around their neck. The most prominenet feature of theirs aside from their 6 legs are the two tentacles that sprout from their shoulders. These tentacles seem to be able to "bend light" as it were, similar to some forms of illusion magic. This allows a Displacer Beast to show a false image of itself as opposed to where it truly is, using this to confuse and distract its prey. Some witnessess describe the sight as this strange "shifting and vibrating" look when observing these creatures use their abilities. They use these illusions to better hunt their prey with their razor sharp claws, and the barbs on their tentacles that are able to punch through steel plate.  Displacer beasts have also been noted as to be resistant to many forms of magic and poisons.

Genetics and Reproduction

Displacer Beasts form mated pairs, with mating season taking place near the end of the year before winter. Liters could range from about 1-4 cubs being born in the following spring.

Growth Rate & Stages

Shockingly fast in growth, Displacer Beasts reach full adulthood within only two years of their birth. Few have ever seen Displacer Cubs due to not only how protective the parents are, but how such cubs rarely stray far from the nest before fully grown.

Ecology and Habitats

Typically favor tempermate climates, such as woods, jungles, hills, and mountains.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Hunters by nature, they are not very picky eaters and will eat just about anything they can catch. This includes mortals and other sapient creatures.

Behaviour

Displacer Beasts typically hunt in packs, but many can still be found alone if seperated from the pack. Unlike most normal beasts, Displacer Beasts are suprisngly intelligent, and many can even speak language, though such reports are scarce at best. It has also been observed that Displacer Beasts seem to have some sort of "joy" for hunting prey down and devouring it, though not to the same extent as Worgs might.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Their hide was valuable as it is naturally magical, and so can be good in the construction of magical items and cloaks. Their eyes are vibrant, and have curiously been used by thieves as strange good luck charms, making them a fairly valuable commodity. The meat is not very good, and so few dishes include the meat, however Dispalcer Beast Blood is not only a common alchemical componenet, but used in making spices for other foods.  Aside from the componenets, Displacer Beasts have also been semi-commonly raised and trained by humanoids to act as guards, pets, or even mounts in some rarer cases. The process of taming such a creature is dangerous, as the beast is a clever creature, but it is said many swear by the loyalty one can have when they have earned the trust of such a creature.
