Anatomy

Cecaelia possess a humanoid form up until their lower body, which has the body of an octopus

Biological Traits

Cecaelia have the lower body of an octopus, and as such can not only breathe underwater but also use the 8 tentacles to interact with objects or even hold down an opponent, or even use them as a sort of primitive bludgeon. Cecaelia are covered in a thin layer of slime that allows them to naturally slip out of being grabbled by a predator. Finally, they can also spew a jet of black ink at a creature to blind them, however if they are underwater it instead creates a cloud of obscuring black smoke.

Cecaelia reproduce sexually, with gestation being about 18 months

Naming Traditions

Cecaelia names are as unique as the individuals who bear them, as they choose their own names upon reaching adulthood. This is considered their true name and most consist of a single word. Due to how they adopt their true name when they are older, families refer to young Cecaelia by very simple "pet" names. However once they have their true name, using their pet name is considered very rude. Family or clan names do not exist, and they find the practice odd amongst the other races.

Due to how nomadic they are, there is no organized kingdom among their kind.

Cecaelia are considered by sailors and those who seem them to be unearthly beautiful, likely in reference to their yokai and deity heritage.

Cecaelia very much look for a person they can have children with when looking for a lover. This is due to how family is important to them, and they have been observed to be almost hyper protective of their young.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Cecaelian culture is nomadic in the extreme, and as such they typically pick up on cultural ques from the lands they prefer to hang around, however one cornoerstone of their culture no matter the location is faith. They are highly devout to their godly parents, and though some may take up faiths of local cultures, they will always revere their god parents above all. Self reliance and independence are also very big themes in their culture as the sea is extremely deadly, and so they must learn to take care of themselves quickly. This can sometimes lead to miscommunications as someone offering help to a Cecaelian unprompted can be seen as an insult to their ability to look after themselves. Cecaelians also can be observed to live very lonely lives, as due to their nomadic way of life many leave their families at some point in their life to go exploring, and many times go alone.

History

The history of the Cecaelia race is not a very well understood one. The Kantōnese have long had many tales of strange octopus like maidens appearing before fishermen to trade trinkets with them, in some stories even marry the fishermen and sailors they come across. The samurai of Kieda Clan believe that long ago, the Elven sea goddess Ivlena would flirt with with with Kantōnese god of storms, Raiden, and from this pairing magical energies were scattered into the ocean as a great storm raged. These magical energies would touch an octopus mother as it lay dying, protecting its young, and through this energy it would bless its children to be the first Cecaelians. They would scatter into the ocean to figure out what their purpose was in life, and since then have wandered around the world seeking to explore the lands. However, many years after their creation, all would feel the pull of the Ivlena, for she saw them as one of her children, and so she would teach them faith, and from this faith they would wander the land as holy men and women. However, Raiden also saw them as his kids, and so this could cause a split amongst the Cecaelians until it seemed that the two religions blended together. Now they worship their twin parents as they wander the lanes of Kantō (who they know the Cecaelians as Tako nyūdō) and beyond.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Cecaelians love to trade with the surface races for trinkets, and so while at first they would scare sailors and fishermen who thought they were a new time of siren, they would come to find that the Cecaelia meant no harm. As such it is very rare for someone to view their kind with disdain, though due to the Cecaelia finding it more comfortable to stay near water, many people also don't know Cecaelia exist, simply thinking they are a bizarre sailors tale.
