Bay't Ethnicity in Tertara | World Anvil

Bay't

War is common in the blazing desert. Greed, holy wars, slave uprisings, war is almost as common as the sand itself. This type of life breeds strong souls, and while the people of western Carall busy themselves with  acting "civilized" and "learned" the people of the east do not busy themselves with such things. Grudges must be paid, for vengeance in the name of the genies and Arrka are needed so that all may know to never dare harm the lands of the genies again. Such is the way of the Bay't, those who bear ancient grudges and deal out vengeance for the countless that died in the past.

Origins

This group of Tajiran come mainly from eastern most Carall, and came to be mainly when a large fleet of samurai warships from Kanto crashed ashore on the sands of Carall. These samurai would seek shelter under the Tajiran people of the east, and eventually would intermingle with the people and eventually adopt the faiths of Arrka. This would lead into the distinct ethnicity known as Bay't.

Culture and cultural heritage

While the Tajiran people of the west live more "calm" lives, those of the east live a far more militaristic lives. They have to, for most of the crusades, and even the undead invasion of Carall began in the east. and grudges must be fufiled. Time and time again has the east come under attack, and many grudges made, so while the people of the west certainly are rather militaristic, the eastern peoples are far more so. Academic pursuits are not outlawed but shunned, seen as wastes of time and so the Bay't city states focus nearly all daily life on martial prowess. Many a time of the Bay't city states of the east done war with one another to show who truly is the masters of combat, thus leading to grudges against one another being made, meaning more wars need to be fought. The west may fight for greed, the Bay't fight for vengeance.   Displaying their samurai heritage, personal honor is highly valued among the Bay't, for if a warrior has no honor they are little more then a deranged barbarian. IN this way, one must act with honor and always observe the teachings of the genies at all times. Defense is one they especially adhere to, as they must defend the lands of the holy by liberating it from grudges and of invaders.   Grudges is sort of a record system of wrongs that have been committed against the Bay't and tajir people. Any treacherous deed committed against their people is added to the Grudge records, and the longer they leave a grudge unfulfilled, it is said the angrier the genies become, and the more wrathful the Bay't become. A grudge can be something as serious as killing tajiran people, or even as petty as refusing to pay for a building in full. While the severity of punishment varies from grudge to grudge, for example missing a payment wouldn't likely result in armies being marshalled, the end result is the same: the grudge bearing Bay't will go out of their way to right this wrong. For this reason it is said a Bay't never forgets, and will never forgive until the grudge is paid in full. Only the sultans in charge of cities can add to the official Grudge Scrolls each city state the Bay't inhabit, but individual Bay't may hold their own grudges close to heart.

Common Dress code

-Common military uniform of the Bay't. The Suns that can be seen emblazoned on much of their armor are to symbolize that their fury is like the sun, and they will burn away the enemy so that Arrka and the Genies may approve of their work

Coming of Age Rites

The aikhtibar aleumur, is where a young child will need to take part in a patrol from one city and then back again. Travel between cities in the east can be highly dangerous, with numerous threats lurking in the sands of Carall. As such, this coming of age rite is very good at separating the weak from the strong. By this point the child will have already been training in the ways of battle for some time. After this rite they may peruse whatever career they choose, or remain in the military. However even those who choose to work in different occupations must be ready to marshal to war as soon as the call is sounded

Funerary and Memorial customs

Burning the bodies of the fallen is seen as to make sure nothing is left behind, for the soul may accidentally stay behind if their is something left.
