Arachne

Basic Information

Anatomy

Humanoid but have a spider like body under the waist. One curious quirk is Arachne possess two sets of lungs, one in their human part and the other in the sider body which are called "Book Lungs", that all arachnids have, that absorb oxygen into the body from the environment without the arachne needing to "breath" in or out

Biological Traits

Arachne possess an exoskelton, and also have sharp claws on their hands they use to rend their prey. Due to possessing a spider half, they are excellent climbers and can climb with ease. Their ability to sense movment in their webs has lead them to possessing improved perception then a human being.  Arachne are capable of shooting webs from either their wrists or the rear of their spider half, this webbing is said to be as strong as steel and can prove to be extremely difficult to break out of

Genetics and Reproduction

Arachne reproduce sexually, but arachne females lay eggs. It takes about 3 weeks for the eggs to hatch

Their face is close to a human, however they possess 6 eyes like a spider and seem to have sharp teeth

Geographic Origin and Distribution

While typically found in the Underdark, arachne have since had to move into the forests of mainly Neundorf, Ashenfeld, and Vebastonne since the Great Underdark Cataclysm. There are supposed reports of arachne being in Kantō but these are not confirmed

Naming Traditions

Arachne names are somewhat similar to drow names, but sometimes include titles such as "ever weber" or "Woman of many legs"

Gender Ideals

Seemingly taking inspiration from the drow, arachne are a matriarchal society, though nowhere to the same level as the drow

Courtship Ideals

In traditional arachne culture, the female will kidnap the male and stela him away to the wedding ceramony, where they marry atop a large web. While nowadays the kidnappings are more discussed and planed out, it still holds significant value for the arachne

Like drow, arachne have a habit of wearing less clothing then other races, but will wear appropriate clothing for inclement weather

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Arachne can be quite scheming, and even after seeking to integrate into wider society, have a small part of them that still love to set up intricate webs to trap things in. However, it has been interesting to note that many arachne work in the clothing industry since their silk is known to be some of the most widely sought materials for clothing in the land

History

Different from the drows dryder, no one knows where the first arachne came from, with some maybe believing a magical spider infected a beautiful woman. She would then seek to spread her gift to others, kidnapping others to sire more children. In ancient history its said at one point, the drow would war with the arachne, for they were gifted to be like spiders but not believing in the goddess Lolth. The exact details of this war are unknown, but what is known is from then on the arachne lived in the portions of the Underdark closest to the surface. This, while at first being somewhat of a determent as they had to travel far to raid others, would actually prove to be their saving graze as the arachne escaped the worst damage of the Great Underdark Cataclysm. After the cataclysm, the arachne would escape into the forests of the neighboring kingdoms. However after a time, the arachne would realize that they cant keep up the raiding culture of their people while being in the proximity of massive kingdoms, and so would work to integrate into the societies of the neighboring kingdoms

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Arachne can be intimidating to other races, but if one where to spend a day with an arachne they would come to realize while some can be rather scheming, they don't generally mean much harm to others. Thanks to their fame in the clothes making industry, many arachne have earned fame over their impressive works of clothing

Both the male and females are naturally attractive, this seems to be another tool arachne use to lure their prey

Mostly humanid skin tones for their human half, but they possess wildly varrying tones for their body, with some even sporting fur over their spider half if they lived in cold climates. Many arachne take to painting patterns on their spider half like skulls or symbols
