History & Usage

History

It is believed Akinstone came from the World Spear itself, where shards of it broke off as it fell and scatterted about the world. Some even have begun to grow upon the planetary rings, and sometimes these minerals fall to the world. Since its discovery, they have been noted as being immensly powerful conduits of arcane magic, and while on their own they typically influence and warp the land around them, they also serve the purpose of mages being able to utilize magic. Though it needs to be refined to gain the full benifits, this process is a closely guarded secret by Lunerra and any and all magical academies.

Everyday use

Commonly used by mages and wizards to allow them to use magic. Typically arcane focuses are made with some amount of Akinstone built into it. The most common style is for Akinstone to be placed into the top of a wizards staff, and tomes have akinstone weaved into the tome itself. Some believe that the more Akinstone one has in their focus, the greater their magic capability.

Hazards

While on its own it is safe to use, it has been observed that it can be dangerous if allowed to grow. Highly prolonged exposure to raw Akinstone can result in Akinstone growth upon the body. Strangely enough this is often not lethal, but extremly discomforting for the victim. Some wizards and mages voluntarily grow Akinstone upon their body, making them into living arcane batteries, though this is seen as an extreme belief only for the most dedicated (or insane depending on who you ask). Some of the greatest wizards and mages have massive growths of Akinstone crystal upon their body. While mental degredation is not a typical side effect, it has been noted that under special circumstances corpses can be reanimated by the crystals itself, and some sufferers of Akinstone growth can become more hostile and suspicious over time.

Environmental Impact

Due to being extremly potent wells of arcane energy, it has been observed that larger clusters of Akinstone can result in arcane phenomena occuring, and Akinstone is primarily believed to have been the cause of several of the magical and strange species of beasts and monsters that now roam the land.
