Archon

While the Overlord’s rule is absolute, the Empire is too large for Kyros to directly control everyone. Instead, Kyros grants authority over different parts of the Empire to the Archons, who are, essentially, second to Kyros. Some Archons are governors of provinces or military districts, others control important groups like armies, mage guilds, or specialized agents like the Arbiters. All are people who wield immense power. It is also a title in Kyros' hierarchy (the rank immediately and distantly below the Overlord).   In modern times every living Archon either swears fealty to Kyros or lives the nasty, brutish, and short life of a hunted animal. Each Archon is granted limited autonomy over their area of control. As long as they serve Kyros’ goals and do not break any of the Overlord’s laws, Kyros permits the Archons to rule their armies and provinces in a manner of their choosing. Because of this, the Archons and the groups they control will often clash with one another. The Arbiters were created by Tunon the Adjudicator, Archon of Law, to solve these problems.

Qualifications

An Archon is identified by their unique ability to create magic rather than invoke it. Only the Archons can do this (and the Exarchs that would become them). Aside form this an Archon must usually also possess exceptional magical ability.

Appointment

An Archon must be declared by Kyros. In very rare circumstances, the title has been claimed by individuals of exceptional power (and audacity), who are usually then hunted by the Overlord.

Duties

Each Archon leads an army, rules a territory, or manages a guild within the Empire. They owe fealty to the Overlord and rule their individual areas of influence according to their own design within the boundaries of Kyros' laws.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

An Archon can be disavowed by the Overlord, but this has always involved their death rather than dismissal. In some cases, younger Exarchs (beings with the power to become an Archon) have slain them and taken their place.

History

An Archon used to refer to individual beings of incredibly power in antiquity. Since the rise of Kyros to Archon to Overlord, however, it now refers to their subordinates within the Empire.
