The Hidden Menace Report

General Summary

The Heroes questioned their captive goblin, who, at the prospect of being allowed to live, was happy to tell them where their treasure was (in the cooking pot), who hired them (an elf! they all look the same to me, tho), and most importantly, the place they were to meet and deliver the stolen Green Star.   The Heroes then found their way back out of the sewers and began a new plan. The idea was that they wouldn't reveal the star had been located -- with Lord Pellham's cooperation on that front -- and then get some rest. They planned to begin their journey to confront the mastermind in the morning.   Lord Robert Carrick, aka Lord Pellham, was overjoyed to see his famiy heirloom returned to him. And in the spirit of cooperating to perhaps capture the mastermind, he without question hit the Star and promised only to hand it to the Archives once he'd been notified they had dealt with the mastermind behind the crime.   On their way to their separate homes, Esyllt remarked that if they managed to bring the culprit to the judge in Swannport, they might gain a very positive, and valuable reputation as investigators. For while the City Watch was there to keep the peace, they lacked investigative resources. Judges therefore hired indepedent investigators to verify presented evidence in cases, or to more deeply investigate crimes. Should the Heroes rise in reputation, that might mean a steady case load.   The next morning, the Heroes gathered at the sewer grate near the Pellham town house and re-entered the sewers. It was a long walk just to even begin the journey, but they found an exit far upriver, through a natural tunnel system. Then it was a matter of following the landmarks the goblin had described in order to find the meeting place. Sadly, once the team found themselves lost in the wilderness, they realized they were woefully underprepared to spend much time out there. Still, they survived a cold, windy, wet night and awoke to a bright, sunny morning, even if that was a bit on the cold side.   They found the meeting sight, and identified a lithe stranger dressed in an undecorated but clearly rich, dark robes siting by a fire. They swiftly devised a plan that sent Jak to the top of an overlooking cliff and Seraphina pretending to be a goblin. Rithari was to stay back 200' and snipe as needed, while Esyllt was to dash in if there was trouble.   There was trouble. The mastermind saw through the ruse because Seraphina actually didn't speak goblin. Their opponent did. Clearly irritated, the elf with the platinum hair vanished after leaving the Heroes fat in the hands of an apprentice and a hidden cohort of kobold henchmen! The fight was vicious and frought with deadly mistakes, beginning with the sorcerer's apprentice, who managed to fry Jak and Seraphina as well as half of his own companions. It took Esyllt valuable time to traverse the distance even at a full sprint, while Rithari tried to snipe the apprentice and kobolds from a distance. Unfortunately, the vagaries of melee, caused missed targets, which had Rithari swiftly taking down her already-injured allies. It was by the narrowest of margins that Esyllt herself was able to at last confront the remaining enemy and help make the Heroes triumphant once more.
