Prismatic Grapes Species in Terra Speculae | World Anvil

Prismatic Grapes

And what will you be having today sir? The red or the blue? Or may I interest you in our house green? -Vicoussian Sommelier

Description

The domesticated cultivar of a wild variety found growing in the Vicoussian hills, Prismatic grapes are noteworthy in that they are one of the few foodstuffs Vicoussians will actually grow themselves and not just have their culimancer conjure out of thin air. Because according to many, the wines made from naturally grown grapes are far more flavourful in comparison to their artificially-constructed counterparts, even after undergoing an "Alchemical Fortification" process. A vibrant species, as prismatic grapes mature they shift through every imaginable colour on the spectrum, with every unique colour bringing a unique flavour alongside. Starting at green and working it's way around the colour wheel like some form of spectral spoke, a Vicoussian vineyard in full fruit is truly a sight to behold, a feast for both eyes and mouth.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

As a result of being domesticated, the vast majority of prismatic grapes are no longer propagated via seed as that would be seen as too risky in producing consistent crops. Instead they're grown as cuttings, with a certain amount being trimmed off a host plant then being planted in the ground for further development. This has the benefit of regularity since every plant is genetically identical to the other, one doesn't have to worry about any single cluster of vines "throwing off the whole batch" as it were. Yet uniformity can often lead to a crack that works its way through the whole structure, and once one archway falls the others are sure to follow suit in due time.

Additional Information

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Bleach Blight

Unfortunately the genetic invariability of the vine has left it particularly susceptible to disease and nowhere is this more evident than with the fungus Uncinula Desaturator, known more colloquially as "Bleach Blight". Sucking away any vestiges of colour the plant once had, the very essence of what made it special, the disease acts as a pale reaper ever on the minds of Vicoussian vineyards, ready to sweep away vast swathes of their fields with one fell swoop of its desaturated sickle of destruction.
