Stratum Thaumaturgica

The "magic layer" of the planet. Physically located between the crust and the mantle, this layer is pure magical energy. During much of human history, only a few special people could access this hidden force, leading to problems between magical and non-magical folk. Because, of course, non-magical people could not sense the magic in any way, so it never existed to them. But during the Emergence the Stratum Thaumaturgica rose to the surface of the Earth in a storm of rainbow colored, upward pointing lightning-like strikes.
