Circumstances since the Emergence have tended to shove people into discreet groups and keep them there. Travel in the Midlands is quite difficult. Different groups of people rarely mix, leading to a stratification of society. Groups tend to form ways that suit them and close ranks against everyone else, which leads to conflict when they may encounter outsiders.
