Zelstine Velnis
From a young age Zelstine was obsessed with machines. For as long as Zelstine could remember, perhaps from birth, she was unfortunate enough to be born with two dysfunctional legs and missing her left hand.
The idea of movement and technology was a huge focus for Zelstine. The first time she saw an airship she was stricken with excitement and obsession. The idea of flying and freedom of movement was something Zelstine dreamed of, since she has been wheelchair bound her whole life.
She dedicated all her time to the study of machines and the intricacies of airships. Her hard work has earned her a spot working at Cloudsong Repairs in the airship yards as an airship engineer and technician, where she currently spends most of her time. When Zelstine isn’t working on Airships, she spends some time down in the junk ward collecting scrap for her own inventions.
Because she is somewhat of a prodigy with airships, she has become a favorite to the owner of Cloudsong Manufacturing, Rafyr Thorgan. Some of the other workers think that Rafyr feels sorry for her and that she is undeserving of the praise she gets. This could also be because Rafyr is a close friend to Zelstines family. What people don’t understand is that Rafyr wouldn’t risk the prestige of his shop for anyone, not even the Velnis family.
Rafyr hired Zelstine because she truly has a love and understanding for Airships. She has proven herself more useful than most he has employed. Because of this Rafyr took Zelstine under his wing and taught her everything he knows. Those that look down on Zelstine or that take issue with her poke at Zelstins disabilities to make her feel weak. Most of them that do this are jealous of her skills and knowledge and feel they need to point out her flaws so they can feel better about themselves.
Zelstine finds her own way to do things and with her obsession of machines in a magitech world, has learned many skills through artificing to help her achieve her goals. She has an upbeat and mostly optimistic personality. She finds joy in creation and learning. This is something she has learned from her parents who both work with their hands for a living. Though Zelstine is upbeat and doesn’t let her disabilities get in the way, other people like to constantly remind her that she is different and weak.
Though Zelstine is successful in her career and has a loving family, Zelstine faces many issues with her disability. She can get around just fine and because she has been this way her whole life, she lives as if she isn’t disabled at all. The physical drawbacks of her disabilities do not bother her, but the social complications and emotional strain take their toll on her. She was teased at a young age and through growing up. And now as an adult, though she is successful she faces prejudice. Zelstine for once would just like to be looked at like a “normal” person and not have her actions tied to her physical appearance.
Rival
The largest airship “corporation”, Halcyon, is the most used and commercially accepted airship manufacturer in Kesmyr. Halcyon’s owner, Wayland Tyrell, is a rival of Rafyr. Rafyr complains up and down that Halcyon airships are designed to break and rely solely on magic tricks. A Cloudsong vessel is made with the finest machinery, only using magic to propel the already exquisite design. While Wayland and Rafyr have their issues with each other. He also takes issue with Zelstine. Zelstine has caused a bit of a commotion in the industry before by either outshining some design Halcyon has released or by outright slander. Though Zelstine’s actions have never had a major impact on Halcyon. Wayland does not take too kindly to her arrogant way of talking badly of his business. And being the protege to Rafyr does not help the matter. Wayland is not the only enemy that Zelstine has made in her time working for Cloudsong. A gnome by the name of Yosfan Marblegem used to work for Rafyr. Yosfan is a brilliant engineer and though he was working his way towards Rafyrs graces. When Zelstine came along and outshined him, it built a rivalry between the two. While Zelstine had fun having intellectual debates with Yosfan on airship intricacies, he saw them as infuriating. When Zelstine was chosen to be Rafyrs protégé and to take lead on repairs in the shipyard, Yosfan had a meltdown. Wayland seeking to hurt Rafyr’s business, capitalized on the situation and hired Yosfan out from under Rafyr. Zelstine was hurt, because while she saw their rivalry as a fun challenge, she missed the fact that Yosfan was frustrated.
