Welcome to Hobby Central D&D Rec League World!

Welcome Players!

We're so excited to have you as part of our Hobby Central D&D Rec league, and can't wait to see you at the table. Before we dive into the in-world game, here are some basics that will hopefully answer your questions about me, player creation, the tone and feel of the world setting, guidelines at the table, and any important variations on the D&D Rules as written.

Who is the DM?

I'm Monica Bower, nice to meet you! You may have seen or heard me DMing at Hobby Central since back in 2019, and I've been DMing and playing since AD&D Purple box back in 1982-ish. However I am only 39 or so, if anyone asks. I live in Liberty Township south of town in a log cabin. I'm married with one child, a daughter, and in real life I'm a Marketing exec. I paint minis and play a lot of video games in my spare time (UnsightedVenus8 on Xbox, PaydayPERX on Steam, Methuselix on Twitch, Vara'li Voo on Discord).

Where and when are we playing?

Tuesday nights from 6 - 9PM at Hobby Central in Delaware, starting March 15, 2022. **Please have your character set up in D&D Beyond before you start playing. Campaign Link: https://ddb.ac/campaigns/join/2625851328737455**

What should I know before I decide to play?

  • Because D&D is a game where details matter and intense focus is sometimes necessary, we want to do everything we can to minimize outside distractions. The content is 18+ and children should not be at the table.
  • This campaign is designed around a drop-in concept where you have the flexibility to play week-to-week based on your schedule. Understand that if you can commit to be there each week, your PC will be much more deeply woven into the story and you as a player will have a greater influence on the world. But I know life happens, and this is rec league, not professional D&D :)
  • The intent is for this session to run though the end of May or early June and then we start over later in the summer/fall. As the game progresses, the starting level for a new PC will increase so you're not hopelessly behind if you join for just 1 game, but we're starting in March at level 1. I intend to continue this campaign indefinitely however, so don't be afraid to go deep with your character; we'll just pick up where we left off and work new players in accordingly.
  • We'll be playing D&D 5e based on the official WoTC ruleset and published materials. Any WoTC official race/class/background is permitted in the game, from any of the books; this isn't Adventurer's League so if you need a race from one book, a class from another, a background from a third and spells from a 4th, that's totally fine. A rule of thumb is, if it's in the WoTC content on DNDbeyond (not the homebrew) then it's fine. Will it work in the world? Sure. It's Rec league, we're not creating the next Lord of the Rings here. But check out the 'Creating my Character' section linked below for lots more detail on this.
  • Come to the game with your character fully fitted out in D&D Beyond for the game at hand. New characters use standard array or point buy for stats and automatic progression for HP because while I'm sure we can trust each other, we don't want to rely on trust when there's a mechanic for balance, especially when people are paying to play. 'Creating my Character' has all the details on this, too.
  • There is a maximum of 7 players per game night; if it comes to it, the order of priority for getting a spot is as follows: Players who were there the previous week get priority; then players who have played in the rec league but weren't there the previous week. People who haven't played at all are third in line for open spots.
