Naphan Agrippa Character in Tergaith: Hobby Central D&D World! | World Anvil

Naphan Agrippa

Naphan Agrippa is (was) equal parts con man and cult leader. Having a vision of a being chosen by the Voiceless God as a young acolyte of Ghalu, a god of trade and commerce, he combined the two religious impulses to write a bombastic and mostly dull religious manifesto about an unseen and voiceless but very much present deity that reads more like a schoolboy's power trip crossed with all the boring and useless metaphors of other people's dreams. He abandoned what faith he had in Ghalu as a patron - as the God is opposed to cheaters, frauds and con men = and set off to attract newcomers to his faith by selling his overpriced book.   On an otherwise nondescript trip to Raven's Rock keep, while on a quest to proselytize to the Orcs, he was given a small ring of black meteorite called the Voice of Shargaas which led him to the resting place of a lead chest in a long-abandoned Yuan'ti Temple. Inside the chest was a staff made of the same meteorite, and wearing it while holding the staff allowed him to hear the voice, finally, of his until-then-Voiceless God.   Camazotl filled his head with promises of real power and real success, far too tempting for a middle-talented, aging con man stuck with thousands of gold pieces worth of books no one wanted that were his only source of income. He could direct the arrival of Camazotl to the world, to create the conditions under which he might arise. Naphan was energized with new purpose and devoted himself to the task at hand, trying to discover a way to protect and enrich himself, even at the expense of his friends and neighbors at the keep. But Camazotl's insistence, impatience and unreasonable demands eventually took their toll on the relationship.   Naphan recruited a number of acolyte helpers, under the guise of the Voiceless God who, since he was also faceless, formless, and quite frankly, something Naphan had made up, was perfectly suited to serve as the cover story for a gigantic evil bat demon who might not be able to attract so many followers directly. In turn Camazotl gave him dominion over the local Xvart tribe, creatures who looked like blue gnomes crossed with upright twinkies who had, as luck would have it, telepathic connections to and affinity with both bats and rats, as well as penchant for capturing rather than simply killing foes. With the xvarts taking stragglers and weaker caravans on the road and Naphan using the twice-profaned sacred vessels from the original temple to brainwash these victims into followers and recruiters, he was able to rapidly increase the size of Camazotl's cult in the area. But the Orc Tribes managed to one-up Naphan, when the Warlord of the Blade Wardens murdered his companion tribe, the White Spears, and then cannibalized them to survive the hard winter. Camazotl was smitten, delighted, and distracted from Naphan's more complicated plans that involved the selling of some now-familiar books in addition to the other cultist activities in and around the Keep.   Naphan didn't want to lose out on his prize to some humanoid ruffians, so he asked for and was granted the Staff of the Bat Swarm, a key item to be used in the summoning ritual. This in turn was an item that the local warlock was keen on acquiring, by violence if necessary, so he hatched a plan to keep the staff from her and invoke Camazotl not at the temple at all, but at his home. He and his cultists set upon trying to pry the sliver of the Fang of Dendar out of the altar at the temple, but he found that it was - somehow- anchored in reality, as solidly as if it were the stone core at the base of a mountain; even with the altar broken away, it simply hung in the air, unable to be moved by any force he had access to. But a practical man, Naphan decided to remove a sliver of the fang and use it as a test. It took a magical blade which was still hopelessly bent in the process, but a small piece was removed, shaking the entire complex like a brief but powerful earthquake as it came loose.   Focusing sunlight through his window onto the sliver in a summoning circle at home, a great and terrifying armored paladin appeared - the paladin of Camazotl, who was made from Camazotl's bound essence. And Camazotl was less than pleased with all this. Meanwhile the Warlock had discovered that destroying the staff could destroy the link Camazotl had into this world, and she redoubled her efforts to find the staff in the caves, never having the moment of inspiration to consider that maybe the staff was back in town in the first place. Convinced that somehow Naphan had secured it in the understories of Quindarin's tower ruin, she left the Temple to go searching for it, and thus far hasn't been seen since.   The Paladin wanted to bring the staff back to the temple and complete the ritual, but in the meantime the adventurers working for the Bailiff found it and took it, having no real idea what it was they were taking; this interrupted all the various plans of various factions, and in addition the war chief Malbyish of the Orcs as unable to get it back or to successfully capture or kill any of them to find out what they knew. Frustrated, Camazotl withdrew what favor he had for the tribe, leaving them to the rapacious goblinoids of the Caves of Chaos, specifically the Hai Kainon hobgoblins and the Clot-cutter goblin tribe, a tribe of werebat fanatics even before Camazotl's presence helped them flourish.   Camazotl could see well enough into the future to know that these adventurers were desperate to confront Naphan, and so there was no need to chase after them' they would return on their own, and the bat lord felt secure that they would bring the staff with them. It would then be a simple matter of having one or all of them drink or eat from the brainwashing vessels, and get the staff into the altar dais to pull down a beam of moonlight onto the exposed relic of Dendar.   Is that what eventually happened? Well, not entirely. But hit it with a moonbeam of a sort, they did; but the portal closed with another loud bang before Naphan could somehow use it, and then the Paladin of Camazotl went down, losing his physical form on this plane and restoring the sliver of the Fang back to the rest of the Fang.    In the end, for all his bluster, scheming and plans, he amounted to some magic armor (undoubtedly bought on loan or possibly stolen), 16 silver pieces and pockets full of collections letters and IOUs. As for Camazotl, and the Voiceless God, their stories will need to be picked up by others, as Naphan is no more.
