Elven Quarter, Orendarium
Newcomers to town are often confused to find few if any Elves in the Elven Quarter, but it is named for the Elven fortress that was located on that section of the high bank long before it became the Ralm Capitol. Characterized by orderly streets and quaint taverns that don't connect to the other streets in the city, it's also where most of the crafting guilds in the city are based. The Grand Colosseum where arena fighting and tournaments are held is in the Elven Quarter, near the site or the original 'dome of peace' from which the city took its name in Elven days. Closed to Squalus, with guard posts at the 4 roads leading in and out, it is densely packed with shops, entertainment and taverns, with second, third and fourth stories often dedicated to residential housing. Many of the buildings are owned by Exultant Houses and Optimate families.
This section of the city has a distinctive look emphasized by plaster and wood finishes and the incorporation of elements of the original Elven structure into new homes and shops, often across multiple buildings. In a few places the narrow and vertical emphasis of stone-based Elven architecture is at odds with the sturdy wood and plaster of the modern city, but for the most part the two exist in overgrown, vine-laden harmony.
The Elven Quarter is a favorite spot for wealthy travellers in the Delabi and Optimate ranks, as it caters to visitors and offers new flavors and sights around almost every corner - though its streets are laid out more or less on a grid, many of the buildings are laid out on angles or separated from their back doors by hundreds of yards, and it truly can be an exploration to find the nooks and crannies of alleyways connected to side streets that then lead to main roads. Carriage traffic is restricted during daylight hours and most travel is by foot or single horse, with many streets so narrow that horses are often led more than ridden. The Watchmen patrol these streets with regularity and issues with crime or dissent are rare compared to other places where the patrols are fewer and further between.
