Stamina
"It's Mana, but without all the finger wiggling!"
What Is Stamina?
Stamina is a secondary resource similar to Hit Points (HP) or Mana. Some spells, abilities, and items draw from this pool instead of (or in addition to) other resources. Stamina represents a character’s short-term physical and mental endurance—used to power special techniques, resist fatigue, or push beyond normal limits.
Characters do not automatically start with a Stamina pool. Instead, they unlock it when they gain their first spell, ability, or item that explicitly uses Stamina. From that point onward, the pool is tracked and can be depleted and restored like any other resource.
Calculating Stamina
A character’s maximum Stamina is determined as follows:
Stamina Pool = Character Level + average of STR, DEX, and CON modifiers
This uses only the modifiers, not the full ability scores. Round down the average if it is a decimal.
Example:
A 5th-level character with STR +2, DEX +3, and CON +1 would calculate:
(2 + 3 + 1) / 3 = 2
Stamina = 5 (level) + 2 = 7
Regaining Stamina
Long Rest
A long rest fully restores a character’s Stamina Pool, just like it restores HP and spell slots.
Short Rest: Using Hit Dice
Characters may also restore Stamina during a short rest by expending Hit Dice, similar to healing HP.
- A Hit Die used to recover Stamina cannot also be used for HP recovery during the same rest.
- Any excess healing beyond the pool’s maximum is lost.
- When using a Hit Die to recover Stamina, the character adds their Constitution modifier to the amount recovered.
- Any effects that modify healing during a short rest (such as features, exhaustion, or contamination) also apply to Stamina recovery.
This system creates a strategic trade-off between healing your wounds and restoring your endurance.
