Goliath
Goliaths are a towering, stone-blooded people native to the remote continent of Doreth. Most of what is known in Anuk and Rariss comes from the few wanderers who leave their homeland to test their strength against the wider world. They are a people sculpted by the gods in the youth of Teramore, formed from storm-shaped stone and the breath of the high peaks. Their bodies bear the marks of this origin: dense muscles, slate-patterned skin, and eyes pale as glacial mists.
To encounter a Goliath is to meet an individual shaped equally by nature and duty. Everything about them—physique, temperament, and worldview—reflects life in lands where the mountains do not forgive weakness. Outsiders often mistake them for aloof or humorless, but among themselves they are fiercely communal, quick to laugh, and unwaveringly fair.
Most Goliaths encountered in the west hail from migrant clans that settled in Tundrin generations ago, though the greater population remains in Doreth, where their society developed in relative isolation for millennia.
Appearance
Goliaths stand between seven and eight feet tall, with powerful, corded musculature. Their skin carries natural markings reminiscent of fractured stone, glacial banding, or storm-burn patterns. Eye colors tend toward greys, steely blues, and pale whites. Wind-chapped skin, weathered hands, and the faint vapor of breath in cold weather are ubiquitous.
Temperament
Goliaths value personal achievement, honesty, and endurance. They have little patience for deceit and even less for cowardice. Competition is a normal, healthy expression of social bond, and most interpersonal disagreements are settled through feats of strength or endurance rather than argument.
They do not shun outsiders, but they rarely idolize foreign cultures. A Goliath’s sense of belonging is rooted not in nation or politics but in their clan and the mountains that shaped them.
Origins
According to the Peaksong Chronicles—a collection of oral tales preserved by Goliath Memory Keepers—the gods sculpted the first of their kind to serve as wardens of the high places. They were to be a stabilizing presence during the tumultuous eras before the rise of mortal civilizations, balancing storm and stone through sheer will.
Whether this myth is literal or poetic, Goliath physiology attests to something more than ordinary evolution.
Lifespan
Goliaths live roughly 80–100 years. They remain physically robust through most of their lives, aging sharply only in their final decade. Many attempt one last great feat—known as a Last Ascent—before their strength fades.
Homeland & Distribution
Primary Homeland: Doreth
Doreth lies far to the east of Anuk, beyond the breadth of Rariss. Its towering mountain ranges and inhospitable coasts have left it largely unvisited by outsiders for thousands of years.
Minor Populations:
• Tundrin (scattered clans)
• Northern Rariss (rare, mostly exiles or pilgrims)
• Anuk (travellers, mercenaries, wanderers)
Most westerners will meet only a handful of Goliaths in their lives, and almost none have ever set foot on Doreth.
Role in the Discordance (Historical Note)
During the Discordance—the era of continental upheaval long before the Sanguine Empire—the Goliaths were drawn into a protracted war between the Orcs of northern Rariss and the Tiefling and Nethrazim powers of Lokesh. They served as shock troops and rift-wardens, sealing planar fractures carved open along Doreth’s northern edge.
Remnants of this ancient conflict still shape their modern views on Orcish aggression and Nethrazim duplicity.
Common Classes
• Barbarian
• Fighter
• Ranger
• Monk (Stone or Storm traditions)
• Cleric (Tempest, Mountain, War)
• Druid (Mountain or Arctic circles)
Full spellcasters exist, but are rare and often viewed with a mixture of respect and caution.
