This optional rule expands character customization by allowing more frequent and flexible access to feats, drawing from any published 5e source (official or DM-approved third-party material). It offers players more meaningful choices during level-ups and encourages deeper expression of a character’s background, training, or growth.
This system runs alongside normal class progression and does not replace the default Ability Score Improvements (ASIs) or class features—unless the player chooses to substitute them intentionally.
Bonus Feats by Level
Characters gain additional feats at the following levels, regardless of class:
1st, 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th, 15th, 18th, and 20th
- These bonus feats are in addition to any feats granted by other sources (such as Variant Human, class options, or feats earned in the normal ASI progression).
- Feats must be chosen from the pool of official 5e content (Player’s Handbook, Tasha’s, Xanathar’s, etc.), or any third-party feat approved by the DM.
- Characters must meet all listed prerequisites for the chosen feat.
Replacing Class Features with Feats
At any level-up, a player may request to replace a class feature, subclass feature, or ASI with a feat of their choice.
- This swap must be proposed at the time of level-up and is subject to DM approval.
- The feat must be appropriate in mechanical value and narrative function. In some cases, the DM may allow the trade of one major class feature for two minor feats—or vice versa.
- Once replaced, the class feature is considered permanently lost unless retraining or narrative restoration occurs.
This system allows characters to evolve beyond the boundaries of their original class—perhaps a Fighter who dabbles in the arcane through feats, or a Druid who specializes in ranged combat tactics.
Examples of Application
- A Sorcerer at level 6 chooses to forgo their subclass feature to gain "Fey Touched", thematically reflecting strange planar influences on their magic.
- A Monk takes "Sharpshooter" at level 3 through the expanded feat schedule to reflect their unique ranged ki technique.
- A Barbarian trades their level 9 "Brutal Critical" feature for "Sentinel", creating a more battlefield-controlling character.
