Aetherium

The Medium That Binds the Planes

The Aetherium is the pervasive medium through which the planes are situated and sustained. It is not a realm, nor a void, but an omnipresent expanse that encompasses both the Proximal and Transcendent Realms, existing as the connective substance between them. All planar structures are embedded within it, and all arcane motion between realms is conducted through its presence.

Arcane energies propagate through the Aetherium as currents rather than forces, allowing magic to extend beyond the confines of a single plane. It is through this medium that the Prime Materium remains connected to the greater cosmological structure, and through which influence, passage, and transition are made possible.

The Aetherium is not traversed casually. To enter it requires deliberate attunement and precise manipulation of arcane principles. Planar transit does not move a traveler directly from one realm to another; it displaces them into the Aetherium itself, from which emergence into a chosen plane is achieved through navigation rather than distance.

Though often described metaphorically, the Aetherium is not symbolic. It is structural. It provides the spatial context in which planes may coexist without collision, drift, or collapse. Without it, the distinction between realms would lack orientation, and planar boundaries would have no meaning.

Movement within the Aetherium is neither linear nor intuitive. Its currents shift according to forces that do not correspond cleanly to time, direction, or proximity. Successful transit depends on alignment, intent, and control, while failure risks misplacement, disorientation, or indefinite suspension.

The Aetherium is not empty. Entities of uncertain origin are known to exist within it, some drawn to arcane motion, others predating the current cosmological order altogether. Their nature is poorly understood, and direct interaction is rarely survived without consequence.

When a mage opens a portal, they do not step directly into another world. They enter the Aetherium, briefly surrendering the certainty of place in exchange for passage. It is a necessary exchange, for the Aetherium is the condition that allows the planes to remain separate, yet reachable, within a coherent whole.
