Ice station Settlement in Teo-Mnach | World Anvil

Ice station

You know, people had warned me about how cold it was down there, but I thought they were probably exaggerating. They were not exaggerating.

A vital resource

Rin Station orbits the ice planet Hod, and runs an ice mining settlement on it's surface. The space station still serves it's original purpose as a water purification and supply station, and Hod provides a constant supply of ice to facilitate this. The miners carve large chunks of ice from the ice fields which cover the planet, and ship them up to the station in specialised cargo transports.

Indoor life

Temperatures on the planet are extremely low and it is impossible to survive outside for more than a few hours even with environmental suits. The miners live in environmentally controlled buildings, specially designed to withstand the freezing temperatures and ice storms which sometimes ravage the planet. As the Miners work for several months at a time on the ice station it has several amenities to make life more pleasant for them, including entertainment facilities, spaces for exercise and sport, a well stocked mess hall, and comfortable, if small, individual private quarters. As well as the domestic buildings, the settlement also has a science station, docking port, vehicle enclosures, repair and maintenance sheds, machinery storage, and a fully stocked med clinic. Access between the buildings is by fully enclosed surface tunnels or the use of vehicles.

Rotating populace

There are as many as one hundred and fifty people living in the settlement at any one time, and while many are on rotation on a regular basis, the mining station does see itinerant workers from time to time, and some people choose to live here permanently. As with Rin Station itself, there are people of all species and walks of on the Hod settlement. Due to the hazardous nature of the job and inhospitable nature of the planet, the money for working on Hod is quite good and so attracts some of the best miners and engineers from all over the galaxy.
