Setebos Myth in Tense River Basin | World Anvil

Setebos

Not all the greater forces of this place mean well. Setebos is fated to consume the Basin in darkness and pain. It is the devil that haunts the dreams of children. He once walked the riverways just as anyone else could be. But he has since been banished to The Place Between Places . Trapped there, but there are cracks in the time and space that binds him. His influence lingers in the dark places of this world. But local legend tells that his access is most direct within the Twistenwud .   Warlocks who seek him out can perform a ritual of calling at an appropriate location within the Twistenwud. A unique property of this spell is that anyone, regardless of class or level, may cast it from a scroll. However, only Warlocks who know the spell can craft such scrolls.

Cult of Setebos

Petition to Setebos

1-level Divination

Ritual - does not require spell slot, takes 10 minutes longer
Casting Time: 1 hour
Range/Area: Self
Components: Verbal, Somatic, Material
Materials: An offering of warm blood, a root tied into a cross and then buried and allowed to grow in the mud of the Twistenwud
Duration: Concentration, 10 minutes
Setebos has little else to do with his time but observe. As he surveys into the Tense River Basin, it is possible to draw his attention with a ritual. The repetition of a fiendish chant coupled with dancing before an open flame will call to him. But the offering of blood will bring him forth in the smoke of your pyre. For ten minutes you may attempt to make a deal with him. Deals may result in you gaining power, knowledge, or in very rare instances direct intercession. But the price for each is in alignment with the value. If no agreement can be reached by the end of 10 minutes, the opportunity is lost and Setebos will not respond to your ritual for one month. Dedicated followers of Setebos may also ask one question.
This ritual can be performed from a scroll by anyone regardless of class or level requirements. However such scrolls can only be crafted by Warlocks with Setebos as their patron.
Available for: Warlock
Rumors spread that many in The Fortch Horde follow Setebos, who only encourages their violent and dangerous behavior. Generally the followers of Setebos must do so in secret within most civilized places, particularly under the eye of the Feathered Hope they risk exile or even death.

Symbols of Setebos

Setebos is considered to be the Patron of the Twistenwud, as such a great deal of the art surrounding his worship involved the twisted shapes of roots. Typically by unearthing the roots of saplings they can be woven into shapes that glorify Setebos. Skilled artisans can use Weaver's Tools with Wisdom or Dexterity to keep the plant alive through the process and suitable for replanting. It takes 1 hour and can be attempted over a long rest. DC is 14. If successful the sapling can be replanted and the roots will grow into the desired shape.

Prophecies of Setebos

The Ravings of Benter Brixlethrush

Benter Brixlethrush was a halfling who should have been a small part of a small window of history. But instead, he was lost in the Relles Sea , his ship capsized and the currents carried him away to certain doom. Although he was never recovered, somehow a journal of his visions appeared as though out of the sky.

Many of his minor visions have proven to be true. Which offers some concern for what the majority of his foresight tells. He recounts visions of a world in which Setebos has consumed everything. They tell of the end of times, but in such a chaotic and at times contradictory way that most believe it must be mad rantings. And yet, the small prophecies all come true. It might not be unreasonable to fear that one day Setebos will be freed of his prison in The Place Between Places and everything will be destroyed.
