The Athenaeum Complex

Written by Nestor Alren
The Athenaeum Complex is located on the Isle of Zis, the same island that is home to the Temple at Zis, the seat of The Divine Duality. The Complex sits near to the coastline, and there is a small village and docks between it and The Niashard Sea.

Purpose / Function

The Complex houses The Athenaeum itself. It is a place of education, both academic and vocational in nature, where anyone ten years or older may apply to be educated in a number of subjects. It is run by, and produces, the Nestori (see Nestor).

Architecture

The architecture of the Complex is eclectic. Today's buildings sit upon ruins from an Age long ago. What remains of those ruins are large slabs of marble, which have been used as the foundation and part of the exterior walls for some of the buildings. Others sit on gray stone slabs or compacted, crushed rock. Those mostly have wooden frames and walls (imported from Dyodia and Beleterra), and thatch roofs, though some are made from various types of brick. There are seven buildings in the Complex, laid out like a six-pointed star, with the seventh building in the center. That center building is constructed of stone bricks, and has a high tower. As high as the tower goes, it has a cellar that reaches just as deep.

Defenses

The Athenaeum has not seen a need for defenses at the Athenaeum Complex to date. It relies upon its respectful relationship with the acolytes of the Divine Duality, and the Myrean-Nemean naval forces to protect it from outside harm.

History

The Athenaeum was founded at the same time as Nemea. It was a part of the original agreement Holy Alcides achieved with the four Great Houses to establish the Kingdom. At that time, certain monastics from the Temple at Zis had already begun building and teaching on the site that the Athenaeum Complex now sits upon.

Tourism

Most people who visit the Athenaeum Complex are either seeking a particular knowledge, or there to see if it is an educational fit for themselves or their child. The Complex boards all of its employees and students, and has rooms available for short-term visitors under certain circumstances. However, most find rooms in the village below.
