Aldermen Rank/Title in Tellus | World Anvil

Aldermen

An Alderman is usually one of society's upper crust. A gentleperson of noble mannerisms. In short, usually the exact opposite of what these fine people elect as their officials. Slack-jawed yokels, the lot of them.

Qualifications

The ability to hold their liquor is of paramount importance to this mostly ceremonial role. S/he presides at weddings and banquets, and hold forth at the local pubs.

Requirements

Usually, Aldermen are ultimately voted in without their knowledge.

Appointment

There is a short ceremony wherein the town clerk bestows the Green Jacket and heavy Medallion of Office.

Duties

Ostensibly to organize fire brigades and police responses, and to ensure equity within the populace. An Alderman is consulted to end disputes of all sorts and causes.

Responsibilities

If there is a fire or an incident, the Alderman is expected to be there helping in any way he can. Or, they were expected to; the position became mostly ceremonial nearly fifty years ago, now.

Benefits

S/he is invited to all of the weddings, funerals, holiday banquets, wagon-bed parties, bonfires, barn-fires, weird sex parties, weirder political events, and naming ceremonies.
Also, they do get laid quite a lot.

Accoutrements & Equipment

Aldermen out here in the sticks get a tailored green coat with gold trim, a large medallion made of anything from brass to platinum, depending on the ego of the incoming Alderman.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

It has only happened once, and he had been beaten up by Old-Lady Jenx and run out of town. So, tarring and feathering. Or, a whoopin' from Old Lady Jenx and then tarring and feathering, to be more precise.
