Póp

The Póp (/poʊp/), also known as the Holy Father (Ecclesiastical Kiltic: Athair Naofa, /ˈɑː θə(ɹ) ˈnif ə/) or the Supreme Pontaif, is the Ardcoarb of Sancta Cedes, Pastúr of the worldwide Community of the Consecrated, and sole Patrarc of the Western Church, as well as the sovereign of the city-state of Sancta Cedes. Other official titles include Vicar of the Four Masters, and Servant of the Servants of the Good God. His primacy within the Sanctist Church is derived from his role as direct successor to Saint Dáire, known as the Prince of the Faithful, who, as brother of Saint Mogue the Elder, was the first to lead the church after the martyrdom of the Four Masters.

In addition to his spiritual oversight of the Sanctist Community, the Póp also exercises physical and temporal jurisdiction over the clergy and, in many significant areas, over the faithful adherents of the church as well. The extent of the Póp’s temporal jurisdiction is referred to as the Pastúral See, a term which is also sometimes used to refer to the church’s central government. Doctrinally, the Póp is considered to have full and supreme authority over the Universal Community of the Consecrated in all matters of faith and morality, as well as in matters of internal church discipline and governance.

Established in the first centurí, the office of Póp is one of the most enduring institutions in the history of the world. Over time, it has accrued significant power and influence, both spiritual and political, and its authority now rivals many important national political leaders. As a result, the Póp is considered one of the most powerful men in the world today.

Etymology

The title Póp is derived from Middle Kiltic pópa (title for a coarb, by 2nd c. only the Coarb of Sancta Cedes), from Old Kiltic popa (title for a clergyman, in the sense of a spiritual father), from Proto-Kilto-Agnomic pāpas (father).

Incumbent

The current póp is Robert IX, who was elected on 23 Fearda 1981. Born Colman macBríde ÓFaoláin in Drumlane, Bréifne on 29 Fearda 1899, he worked several physically demanding jobs as a young man, including as a construction laborer, a janitor, and even as a stevedore. His life changed dramatically when he embarked upon a religious life and was Consecrated in 1925, after recovering from a life-threatening illness. He was later Perfected in 1943 and joined the clergy.

He held a variety of pastúral positions within the Community of the Consecrated for many years. Eventually, he was elevated to the position of Coarb, appointed Coarb of Clonarush in 1969. Following the death of Póp Dainéal VII on 22 Cesoren 1981, a Conclave of the Cúirt Naofa was convened in Sancta Cedes to select a new Holy Father. On 23 Fearda, Coarb Colman ÓFaoláin was elected by secret ballot as Póp Dainéal’s successor, choosing Robert as his regnal name.

Throughout his life, Póp Robert has been known for his humility and compassion, and concern for those less fortunate. As Póp, he has maintained a high profile on the world stage, using his position to advocate for a more humane international economic system, greater concern for the world's environment, and broader cooperation among the various religions around the world.
